If you do buy a 3" 1911, make sure to have some spare recoil spring assemblies on hand as a spare or two.
That will be the weak link in the system, based on my experience.
Colt Defender. Love it. Shot the heck out of it. Munched the springs around`1500 rds. Can't get them from Colt anymore (???) so had to buy some Kimber assemblies. Good to go.
So, if you do buy shorter than Commander length, be aware of round count and have necessities at hand if you use it for protection and range time. I now carry the lightweight Defender more than I shoot it, but it is a joy to shoot and oh so light to carry. (as you age, these things might become important to you, but lugging an all steel 5" 1911 around does weird things to my back/hips if I carry too long... which sux)
