Hello everyone,
My name is Jeff and I'm new to this forum.
I searched the forums for an answer but was unable to find exactly what i'm looking for. I thought an introduction thread would be a good place to start.

I've recently moved to Florida and I'm interested in obtaining a concealed carry permit.
I was denied a permit in New York.

After recieving this bad news, I contacted the division of criminal justice in NYS and obtained a copy of my criminal history.
There was 1 felony arrest, 1 violent felony arrest & 3 misdemeanor arrests.
Total convictions..0 felony, 0 violent felony, 0 misdemeanor and 3 "other"

I assume the "other convictions" are non criminal as all charges were either dismissed or "adjourned for payment"

Will my past record prevent me from gettinga carry permit in Florida too?
I hate to spend the money on fingerprints, applications, etc.. if I'm going to be denied again.

any thoughts would be welcomed and thank you for allowing me to participate.

Welcome to THR! It probably won't deny you since there were no felony or domestic violence convictions but your best bet would be to call the sheriff in your county and ask before going through the process.

a warm welcome! thank you very much!

I checked out the link you provided Carne, and other than the required firearms training document that I have not yet completed, it appears that I would qualify in Florida.

also worth noting the associated fees are significantly less than NYS...I applied there in 2003 and seem to remember spending close to $600...
looks like I can apply here for under $200. plus whatever the training certification would cost...maybe an addition $100?...really not too bad...and good for 7 years.

thanks for the help folks, I'm feeling more confident already!

If what you say here is the complete truth, you will have no problem in Florida. Don't look to your county sheriff for advice, though, as they have not had authority over licensing to carry since 1987.
Oh, and stay out of trouble. That might be hard in NY; I realize it's a different world up there, but I find it pretty easy here in Florida..

Can't comment on Florida but alot of states would say no. I'm not saying that people don't get wrongfully accused but 2 felonies, 1 violent? You weren't convicted but there must have been a reason you were hauled in. You were in the wrong place at the wrong time on five occasions?

Having lived in NYS I can testify that it's not too difficult to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, actually pretty easy to do. I've seen it happen that you will be arrested simply because SOMEBODY has to be arrested, right?

I don't know, or care to know, the circumstances of the OP's arrests but with no convictions with three times at bat sounds like some of the parts of NYS I'm familiar with.

Good luck getting your Florida permit. :)

Due process of law.

Maybe he deserved it, maybe he didn't. But remember, a cop can arrest anyone. An arrest is an accusation. Not a judgment. We all know full well that on the other side many have COMMITTED felonies that DIDN'T get arrested or charged, with no good explanation as to why.

It is an imperfect system, but it's still the system. If the law says 'conviction', that's what it says.
