I thought of the idea of a muzzle-attached parabolic cup that reflects the sound of a muzzle blast downrange. The parabolic shape is chosen on the same principles as the light bulb reflector in a flashlight.

This would not be the same as a suppressor because it does not serve to reduce the sound. Instead, it redirects the sound away from the shooter.

Is this a workable concept?
Is there any device out there that will do this?
Would such a device be legal to own without going thru the NFA process?

You mean something like this

I thought that was a flash suppressor. Does it actually have the effect of directing sound downrange? And it's a cone projected from the muzzle rather than a cup around the muzzle. That does not seem like it would have such an effect.

It would have to be pretty big to shield the diameter of the blast to prevent sound waves from reaching back as the gas expands violently in front of the muzzle.

Well it works, whatever the physics may be. My 11" AR was unbearable to shoot with a standard flash hider. I put the Noveske on it and it was a world of difference.

You can read reviews of the thing all over the 'net saying the same thing.

My shooting friends all commented that they could barely stand to shoot next to me with the standard FH installed but once the Noveske was on they said it was actually less bothersome than 16" rifles.

I have designed and machined parabolic reflectors and your idea is very interesting. At 1" tall, a parabolic reflector is already 4" in diameter, so size would obviously be a problem. The reflector works off a focal point (1" away from the center on a 1" tall lens), and they are designed to focus a source that is hitting the parabolic shape uniformly into a cylinder that is the diameter of the lens. If it worked (in a perfect world), the sound would be almost as dangerous as the bullet! The cones shown are very far from parabolic and though they may dirrect the sound away better than nothing, they will mostly scatter the sound waves.

+1 for the noveske "fire breathing pig" muzzle can!

I was number two man in a stack during a team building clear at one of our local LEO ranges and lemme tell ya the HUGE difference between his AR and mine!

OI!OI!OI!
