Been messing around with placement and I have to admit that one of the most comfortable, hidden locations for my CCO-sized 1911 is at 6:00, grip up.

I know most folks frown on this, but I'm not really sure why. I don't buy the whole "you'll hurt your spine" thing, and I can access the pistol with no trouble. That last part suprised me.

So what's really wrong with this approach? I searched for "SOB carry" and "SOB IWB" with no luck.

Note: I'm short and skinny, and finding a good spot for concealment isn't too easy.

Here's the blurb from R&F Holsters, for the Alessi MOB -

I won't get into the dangers/advisability of carry in that position, but I carry a SIG 220, S&W 4516-2 and a S&W 3913 in the MOB, moved slightly strong-side and off the spine. I've had spinal chord injury, and am somewhat more sensitive to the issue than some, but this rig, with the above guns, is the single most comfortable IWB I have ever used. The 220 (big butt, as I call it) is prone to printing with the two other IWB rigs I have for it, unless I wear it so far forward that it is uncomfortable. The 4516 is heavy, and noticeable even in the MOB, but still more comfortable than in others I've tried. The 3913 is one of the most carry-friendly guns ever made, and almost vanishes in a MOB, for hours and hours and hours. I've worn all three guns traveling, and still arrived after five-six hours of driving with many other body parts sorer and more cramped than anything contacted by the gun.

I bought one of the SOB holsters and like it - SOMETIMES - !

Its a great way to conceal even a fairly large gun. Draw stroke looks as if you're reaching for you wallet. Very comfortable when walking around, the weight just above your butt is not as noticable as when it's hanging off your hip (at least for me)

The problem arises when you try to sit down. Sitting even in a soft padded chair or car seat quickly becomes uncomfortable with a SOB holster. Accessing your gun froma sitting position is near impossible too.

If you plan to spend all day walking or standing, SOB may work. Plan to sit for more than 5 minutes (unless it's on a stool) forget it. YMMV

Thanks for the info.

Does anyone know of a kydex SOB IWB holster with that typical grip-up position? Blade-Tech has this SOB holster, but it's not IWB. And FIST has this SOB IWB holster, which they could make in Kydex, but it's got the upside-down grip.

I would think there's at least one out there...

Every time someone brings up SOB holsters, someone else brings up the back injury aspect.

Has anyone ever actually been injured with an SOB holster?:scrutiny:

I saw an officer come in to the ER from the Minneapolis PD with an injury to his lower back. He got thrown around while working narcotics. He was moving all extremeties just fine, but looked VERY sore.

The other issue with SOB/MOB is weapon retention. If someone behind you tries to take it away, it will be much harder to retain than one at 3 or 4 oclock.
