Conundrum 9mm

Greetings,

I am handloading Hornady XTP 124 Gr in 9mm.

Ramshot version 4.3 (i know it is the old one, but the new one does not have data for that bullet) has data for it and says COAL 1.169.
Lyman has a 124 gr JHP and says 1.075.

Federal Hydrashock ammo 124 gr is 1.097

If I load to 1.082, the shoulder of the bullet (the straight part of it before it turns to the ogive is out of the case by 0.100. Must I be concerned? It is the first time I load a bullet with suck a demarcation between the ogive and the straight wall part of the bullet.

Anyone has access to the Hornady loading book and can tell me what they say about the COAL for their XTP 9mm 124 grains? By chance, would they have data for the Ramshot Silhouette powder?

9mm COAL of 1.169" is the SAAMI Max length for any bullet, not that one.
It has more to do with fitting any magazine then fitting any chamber.

Hornady says 1.060"
But that might not be right for your chamber either.

Do the "Plunk Test" and seat short enough the bullet is missing your rifling leade.

Load it to 1.080" OAL.

Use Ramshot's data for the Sierra 125gr JHC bullet. I've gone up to 5.2grs under the XTP @ 1.080" and it's fine.

My Hornady data lists an OAL of 1.060". But as RC said, that may not be the OAL that is best suited for your firearm and to do the plunk test to determine such.

From what I seeing in my books indicates you are .3 grs. under starting charge for that powder. But don't take my word for this, verify first hand such important elements of reloading from a trusted data source. But if that data is .3 grs. under the starting charge you taking a big risk in sticking a bullet in your barrel which could lead to a KB if it slips by unnoticed before pulling the trigger a second time.

I have the Hornady 9th Edition and it doesn't list any Ramshot powders in 9mm. My 9mm One Book/One Caliber has Hornady data with WAP though (same exact powder as Silhouette.) It starts at 4.2gr for 900fps and maxes at 5.8gr for 1100fps. All of the data for the other powders that are also in the 9th Edition are exactly the same (Unique, Herco, N350, Power Pistol, SR 4756, HS-6, Blue Dot and AA#7.) Articles in Handloader's Propellant Profiles say they are the same powder and WAP data can be used with Silhouette. COL is as other's have stated 1.060" but make sure they work in your pistol first. I haven't shot XTPs in my latest 9mm yet but I have in my 45s. Seated to Hornady's COL they worked fine in my first 45 but the one I bought about a year ago has a shorter leade and the shoulder of the bullet got jammed into the rifling. I had the same issue with plated flat points that chambered fine in a P89 but were too long for a Witness Elite Match. Every gun is different so make sure your loads work in your gun. I think loading to 1.080" in my guns would be a no go, but if it works for others that's fine. That's one of the many pluses of handloading, custom tailoring ammo for your gun. If I ever want to shoot XTPs in my second 45 I will need to load them shorter than Hornady's COL, and reduce powder charges as well.
