So for every caliber conversion on a 550 you need to buy dies and a conversion kit that only Dillon make (or do other 3rd party manufactures make them too)? Do any of the other progressives use this system or something like it ? Does this amount to a shell plate on other presses.

I don't think the Dillon kits would work on any other brands, but you never know. It would be a safer bet to assume they don't. Some parts of the kits are repetitive depending on the caliber dimensions. An example would be loading for the 45 Acp and the .308 Win. They both use the same size locator button and shellplate, but use different powder funnels. The Dillon website has a chart there somewhere that lists all the components needed for all the different calibers. You can just order the basic conversion kits you need and may find you just need a few different separate components to interchange and avoid the costs of a conversion kit for EVERY caliber you reload.....it just depends on the dimension of the cases you need to reload.

I did a search for you and found this list on the BrianEnos.com site.
Dillon caliber conv. cross reference chart.

Hey thanks for the link. That cleared up a few things, but now I have a few new ones.

you just need a few different separate components
Can they be ordered that way, All I see are the full kits?

Do any of the other progressives use this type of system. I I bought the RCBS Pro 2000 would I be able to change caliber's with just changing out the dies or do they have something they is basicly the same deal as Dillons " conversion kits."

Yes, Dillon will sell individual components of the conversion kits. Just give them a call and let them know what you need.

The RCBS Pro 2000 does use shellplates, but the catalog shows no other parts listed by size. They may be the only part needed that is different from caliber to caliber. The factory list price is $31.95 for the shellplates, which are the same ones used on the Piggyback unit as well as the Ammo Master. Here is a link to a website with a list of the available shellplates though it doesn't show what caliber each is good for. Scroll down to where you see the AmmoMaster/Pro 200/Piggyback shellplate list.RCBS parts.

Found their shell holder reference chart. It may be the same as the shellplate numbers.Shell Holder Chart.

I love me some link, thanks. That cleared up everything for me. I was starting to believe Dillon was "getting" us for one extra part. I should have realized, different bullets will need different "seats."
