This is just out of curiosity - what all is involved in converting a 9mm 1911 to 38 super? Is it just a barrel change?

You will probably have to change the recoil spring and possibly the extractor in addition to purchasing magazines.

fletcher,

This is the inverse of converting a .38 Super to 9mm. Using factory ammo, all you will need is:

1) Super barrel
2) Extractor adjustment (most likely)
3) Magazine (maybe)

Most Super mags will feed 9mm fine. Not sure of 9mm mags feeding Super. You can retain the 9mm ejector, extractor, even the recoil spring. The extractor is easy to adjust, do a search or let a smith do it.

I've done 3 conversions of .38 Super to 9mm.

A 9mm magazine will not hold .38 Super. I have found that the Metalform 9-round Super magazine with their rounded follower is very good with both calibers.
You might have to shorten the ejector, but the Super length will do OK with 9mm.
You will likely have to tweak the extractor for the semi-rim.
Recoil spring is the same.

Actually, you could come out ahead trading guns. There are a lot of people around who want to convert Supers to 9mm for the Kraut ammo, and even a straight trade would save you both the cost of a barrel.

You will need a Super .38 ejector as the 9mm. one will be too long for the Super .38 case. I've done a few of these, but I've always started with the Super .38 and then converted it to 9mm. All you need is a Super .38 barrel assembly and a Super .38 magazine. I never changed the recoil spring out, but if there's any initial functioning problems I would go with a heavier spring then for the Super .38.

Listen to Jim. He's smart. ;)

Love my Supers. I liked the first one so much, I got another uncomped Super.

I have a ratty looking old pre-70 Super that came with a semirim 70 series barrel. I got a 9mm barrel installed for plinking purposes. I would like to refurbish the gun to an early IPSC style, after the Super was "discovered" but before compensators and optical sights.
