Greetings,

I went to the range with my Taurus 650 .357 2" snubbie. I fired 5 Winchester JHP. 5 Hydra-shock without an issue. I fired the first round of the Cor-bon and the gun locked. I mean trigger, cylinder, everything. I took a rubber mallet to open it. I checked for obstruction and used the other ammo again. It worked fine. One more round of Cor-bon, total lock up.

My question to the wiser of this group is WHY?

Any ideas are helpful.

Simple answer - overpressure ammo. Cor-Bon's .38 Special loads have always been known for being right on the ragged edge of safe pressures, and if it's a hot day, and/or the gun and/or cartridges have been in the sun, this can push it just over that ragged edge. Personally, I don't use Cor-Bon in .38 Special for that reason.

Try the new Speer 135gr. GD HP in .38 Special +P - good stuff!

Thanks for the responce.

This was 100 grain .357 Cor-bon. not the .38

on that note what other ammo would you suggest

You can be bold and go with the gold standard for .357, Federal 125 grain JHP. It will be rather grim out of a 2" barrel though. It was possible in my 640 with a 2.5 inch barrel but you knew when it went off.

Then there is the new Winchester 145 grain Personal Defense Silvertip. That one looks good on paper but I haven't actually shot it yet.

Or you can do what a lot of people do with the small .357's: treat it as a strong .38+P. Get some of the NYC load. 158 grain lead hollow point in +P configuration. Would be an easier load to control and NYPD proved it worked on BG's.

Was the revolver fully loaded?
Do you try loading just one Glaser Pow'r Ball and then firing for effect?

You can't shoot only two types of ammo and have a problem with one and automatically assume that it's the ammo at fault.
Federal is noted for being loaded on the light side.
The only thing you have determined is that whatever is wrong is accerbated by Federal ammo.
It would be interesting to see what happens with another brand of stoutly loaded ammunition.

If you have ANY brand of factory ammo causing your gun to lock up, have your gun checked! It would be dangerous to assume that it will only happen with one brand of ammunition and not another.

Investigate it further and keep us posted.
