Why do we hate bears so much round here?

When we have big game hunters killing enormous bovines with handguns I don’t see how there is any debate. Handguns can work if you know what you’re doing and choose appropriate guns and ammo.

If you think you might need to fend off or put down ANY large animal, a bigger handgun cartridge is better than a smaller one. Choose an appropriate bullet that is designed to penetrate deeply. Done. That’s all that’s to it.

If you want to carry a smaller cartridge, then you still need to pick the right bullet and acknowledge that a smaller cartridge will do less damage and may not stop as effectively. It’s a calculated risk.

Hitting an important part of the animal is the most important part.

Its no mystery why we hate bears, Yogi the bear convinced an entire generation that bears are out to steal picnic baskets and annoy the local park rangers. Smokey the bear came in at a time of increased teen aged rebellion against authority, although he meant well the general attitude was "I aint gonna listen to no bear about fire safety".

Well to paraphrase Elmer Keith on handguns and bears when a bear attacks...Carry the most powerful caliber in a handgun that you can shoot well and a proper bullet for the job. Stick the gun in the bears mouth and keep pulling the trigger till you no longer have a hand. Hopefully that'll work.

Apparently my great great uncle had a pet bear when he lived in northern MI. I saw a picture of him and the bear taken in the 50s. It was definitely still a bigger cub in the picture but he presumably had it into adulthood until one day it wandered off after a few years of living in his shed and not being forced to stay.
