Coyote advice

I live on 30 acres, have noticed more coyote activity lately. I hear them howl from dusk to late at night mostly - don't hear or see them during the day. I was wondering between a 12 ga with red dot and flash light or a .22 semi auto- (ruger 10/22) also with rds sight and flashlight which may work better. Any shot made would be within 50 yards. I would also like to hear any ammo recommendations for either gun. Shotgun ammo is supposed to be #4 buck or smaller according to regs in TN. Finally I also have 30-06 that may be used during daylight hrs if possible. Any other advice is welcome-thanks

With the guns that you have. Any of course will work a CCI mini mag behind the ear even at 50 yards works like a charm from a .22lr

The 12ga any turkey shell that patterns well in your gun is more than enough with its effective pattern range.

The 30/06 well I hope you don't want the pelt

Try the Rem. .223 with 52 gr. BTHP's, that'll make 'em lay down in a hurry!

Thanks guys- I would like to add an AR-15 in .223 at some point but it's not a big priority right now so those are the only other long guns I have. I saw some "dead coyote" shells but didn't want to pay $40 a box for them. I do have some turkey shells already but seems like the shot size is too small. How bout rifled slugs as an option?

I'd get a box of 125 gr SP or HP for the 30-06 and call it good.

Thanks Nicky, I'll look for some 125's, right now I mostly shoot 150 gr SP ammo. I think the '06 seems to be the best option that I have in bright daylight but it is useless at night and troublesome in low light situations in general like dusk and dawn with the scope it has (which is just a cheap factory scope). I have been wanting to get another scope for it anyway maybe I need something that is illuminated. Any suggestions on a scope good for low light situations is welcome- preferably under $200 or so.

I shoot them with anything i can! What ever is in my hands, if they are close enough, they get shot!

Of your choises, i'd sight in the 30-06 and shoot them as far away as i could safely shoot!

If you want a good scope for the money get the 16x centerpoint from walmart. It has both red or green illuminated reticles and holds a zero real well on high recoil rifles and it is only 70 bucks.

12Ga with #4 buck works well. Shotgunning coyotes is a lot of fun and easy on pelts.

The first question that needs to be ask is:
What is outside your 50 acre boundary lines??

If it's neighbors, or sheep, or cattle, or roads, or hippies picking flowers, the shotgun would be the only safe choice you have.

Both the 10/22 rimfire or the 30-06 are capable of skipping ricochets well outside your property lines and hurting something, or someone!

Most common and preferred is 3" #4 buck. Both Remington and Federal make it, both are 41 pellet loads I believe. I often use 2 3/4" buck with 27 pellets made by Estate. I bought a bunch of it on sale and it patterns well from my shotgun.

Thanks again, I have some 2 3/4 #4 bk by Remington and federal but have not been able to locate any 3" around here. May buy it online I guess.
