I recently got my first rifle. It's a Ruger 77 chambered in 25-06 and seems to shoot very well at 100YD on the range after the 10x Leupold was sighted in. I have an opportunity to hunt some coyotes soon. It would be about 40 miles outside Mt. Vernon. A farm where chickens are being demolished by coyotes.

I had an exchange with someone who told me various things about coyote hunting and my Ruger 77. It seemed to me like he didn't really know what he was talking about, but here's some of the things I was told. Keep in mind that he said he'd only been coyote hunting something like a couple times twenty or so years ago outside Valencia, CA.

About the rifle
-Only use a semi-auto and never a bolt-action for coyote hunting (because you'll need to get off more than one shot very quickly)
-A 25-06 BA is only good for 40-60 YD sniper shooting
-25-06 is only good for deer, elk, and bear in this area and if you go up against bear or elk you will lose

About the coyotes
-If the coyotes are devastating this guys farm, all he needs to do is chain a couple dogs up outside and have a .410 scatter gun ready when they start barking.
-Only shoot from a ridge and never a hill or a valley
-Don't ever go dog hunting, and coyotes are basically wild dogs that are just hungry carnivores
-If you ever go coyote hunting, "You will lose"
-Coyote will sneak up on you because of their superior sense of smell that is 3x as sensitive as a human's
-They will always travel in packs, but always with one female in the pack
-The female will sneak up behind you
-If you shoot anything around a mom with cubs, she will sneak up behind you and you will lose

Was this guy totally wrong, not knowing what he was talking about and trying to scare me, or are these little honest factual tidbits of info? I think he was trying to be sincere, but didn't really know a lot abut this subject. So why not shoot them? From his description they sound pretty dangerous; if there were less around they probably wouldn't be so hungry because there would be less looking for food. He didn't mention anything about them smelling bloody meat/bait easier because of the superior smelling. Wouldn't a coyote be able to kill a chained up dog or 2? And wouldn't a 4" 357 MAG or hi-cap 9mm or 20 gauge be able to take out a coyote or two at close range? There would be at least three people out hunting....

This guy is F.O.S.!!!!!

Coyote sneaking up on you? Maybe after you win the lottery and get struck by lightning in the same day.

Pretty much all his "info" is absolutely false.

Wouldn't a coyote be able to kill a chained up dog or 2?

Any self-respecting farm dog can whoop up on a coyote. Though packs may pose trouble, my money is on the farm dog. Chaining dogs is a silly thing to do if you have a predator problem.
