I was out deer hunting a few days ago. Ten feet into the woods I jumped two coyotes that must have been watching me get my stuff together at the truck. It was pitch dark and I was using a red headlamp. They ran whne I was about ten feet from them... if that.
Later in the day I found the carcass of a small button buck. He didn't appear to have a wound on his body, but one rear leg was stripped to the bone from hoof to spine. Entrails appeared to be intact. Kinda odd I thought. There was a red tail hawk hanging around the area as well. He flew off as I approached and was not happy with me atall. What do you suppose got him?

pretty sure the coyotes got to him.

if you are in snow country, track some coyotes for awhile. eventually you'll see they get into deer tracks, and quite often you'll find a kill scene. coyotes kill deer, especially small ones, regularly.

it is appropriate in s.d. to kill any coyote on sight. a rancher told me once that if i neglected to kill a coyote when i saw one on his place, i could no longer hunt on his land - even if a world record buck got up at the same time as the coyote, the coyote better be dead or the deer better not be...
