Back in January I purchased a Winchester M88. It is a 5 digit Pre-'64 in 308. It also has a cresent butt stock. Over the past few months of doing research for parts, stocks, and just getting a general knowledge base for the rifle, I have never seen this mentioned. It looks professionaly done and the butt plate fits like its suposed to. Did Winchester offer this as an option? I am certain that its the original stock. I don't really like it and was thinking of replacing it with a flat recoil pad, but dont want to if it's some rare factory option. Any help is appreciated.

As you can see, its plastic. it has the Winchest logo. the stock is cracked behind the rear action block. if the cresent is not original, it would make me feal no guilt repairing and refinishing the stock.

Well, I suspect someone modified it by sanding out the stock curve and bending the plastic butt plate by heating it.

Probably somebody had a preference for something like that left over from the older crescent butt plate lever-guns.
(to keep the stock from slipping when running the lever.)

Certainly never seen anything like that on any factory Winchester stock.

The plastic slightly curved butt plates of that era were pretty much standardized in size, and the same ones where used on the Model 100, possibly the Model 70, and even the shotguns.

jakk,
If memory serves me I believe Brownells web site has a iron sight height calculator, also it is in Gunsmith Kinks 4 pgs 102-103. This is used to choose the new front sight.
