Got my first tactical folder this weekend. I have been carrying for a while and I guess the knife was bound to come eventually...

I wasn't ready or educated enough to drop a bunch of money on a knife yet. I got what I think was a good deal on a Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) Point Guard. This is a nice looking knife, with a four inch blade. It had some less common features, like a thumb wheel for opening and a "safety" that engaged the liner lock and ensures the blade will not close accidentally. It was $32.

Is this at least a half-way decent tactical folder? Anything I should know about it?

I carried it this weekend. I had always carried knives in my pocke,t but found the clip made it very easy to carry inside the waistband at my 4:00 (my j-frame was in my front pocket). Do a lot of people carry this way, or not? Another thing I liked about it was the ability to reach it with my off (left) hand if necessary.

The CRKT Point Guard is a good knife and a great value. While AUS 6M isn't the best steel available it will serve very well for day to day tasks.

Appendix, or 4 o'clock, carry is an exellent way to keep the knife in contact with the body, well indexed, secure, and unlikely to make others concerned about it's presence.

That is a good price. I paid more for mine. Too much, but I am weak and it was unusual.

Pretty cool knife. That little lock is called a LAWKS (Lake and Walker Knife Safety). Very simple way of keeping the liner lock locked. A gimmick.

I seem to gravitate towards collecting CRKT knives. They are reasonable in price, well made, and many of them have some sort of "gadget" feature that makes them different. But I don't carry them much.

What do I carry every day lately? Simple stuff.

A Mini-BuckLite for opening letters and such - never raises an eyebrow - sharpens easily.
A Spyderco Dragonfly, just in case. But I must get a bigger Spyderco.

We have sold them very well, they seem to be a very nice knife for the price point. CRKT makes some nice stuff for everyday folks like myself! Paul

I have the smaller of the two Point Guards and am quite pleased with mine.
It stays in the car for those situations where I forget to bring alone the Benchmade Stryker (absolutely my favorite knife).

The workmanship seems to be on par with my Benchmade, and it was 1/3 the price. Seems a great value to me as well.

I've owned and carried a Point Guard for about a year now. It doesn't feel as sturdy as my Spyderco Wegner and it doesn't hold an edge as well either. (Wegner is ATS34)

On the flip side of that AUS6 is MUCH easier to sharpen than ATS34 and it holds it's edge well enough. The lock has never failed me and I have used it very hard. Recently the thumb stud fell off of the LAWKS system. I contacted CRKT and they are shipping me a new one, free of charge, as we speak.

The Point Guard isn't fancy or expensive but it is a good every day working knife. My only suggestion is to go through all of the screws and apply a little Lok Tite. (this is recommended by CRKT also)

Don't abuse it, but don't be afraid to use it hard. It's a good blade.

I don't think the LAWKS system is a gimmick. I have a CRKT Ryan Model 7 with this system and it makes it impossible for the liner lock to slip off the blade. This means that so long as the liner lock does not break or bend the knife will not close. I just got the knife a couple weeks ago and already I'm in the habit of flipping the lever as I open it. Good luck with your new knife.

Jeff
