I'm going to be taking a cross country road trip, from Virginia to California in a couple of weeks, and since my usual truck guns won't work on the left coast (yugo SKS and AK) I need advise on what gun to get to bring with me - something cheap and reliable and PRK legal.

Also, how should I store the rifle outside of VA?

My vote for a $60.00 M39 and some SP 7.62X54.

I am under the impression that FOPA allows you to transport firearms through states as long as theyare leagal in your home state.

Or I may be full of it :scrutiny:

You have half of it. It has to be legal in your home state, and in the state of your destination. On top of that it may have to be unloaded and locked in the trunk.

Here is the applicable federal law, if you're going to be transporting through an "anti-state" I recommend you print it out and put a copy of the printout with the gun in case you run into an ignorant LEO

TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 > Sec. 926A. Prev | Next
Sec. 926A. - Interstate transportation of firearms

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console

What is a destination?

If I drive from Kolumbus to L.A., spend the night in L.A., and drive back to Kolumbus, what is the destination?

The reason I ask is I just did this sort of. I drove out to Mt. Rushmore 2 weeks ago and me being parnoid I took my G-23 w/ full-caps and my AR w/ full-caps. My trip took me from OH through IN, IL, WI, MN, SD and WY. I never stayed more than one night in any state other than SD but not the same town. I know my firearms were not welcome in IL but I was just passing through and they were quite secured. Did I break a law? (asking for future travel info.)

I guess my point is, to me my destination was Kolumbus.

Your destination would probably be considered to be whereever you plan to make the U-turn.

A fair question. I suppose you'd need an answer from someone who is competent to interpet federal law, and that wouldn't include me. The law quoted above, in retrospect to the way in which you pose your question, does indeed apear to be a little vague.

I'd say that at the very least, you'd want to be able to state to a potential arresting LEO that you are transporting the firearm to xxxx, and that xxxx be a place where the firearm is legal, and is somewhere in the general direction of the direction in which you are driving, and then to stick to that story.
