crushed neck during seating

I tried adjusting my dies to where the bullet is seated fully when the die touches the shell plate, problem is it crushes the neck when i do this, is this normal? should i keep just backing the die off a 1/4 inch and adjusting from there?

Seating die- place a sized case , no bullet, in the ram, run to top of stroke. Screw die down till you feel die touch case mouth. Back die out 1 full turn. Its in the instructions. Read them.

thanks, i usually pick up used dies so i dont have any instructions lol

The sizing die has to touch the shell plate to properly FL size.

The seating/crimp die will crush the case trying to over crimp it if screwed in all the way.

Follow 243winxb's advice to adjust it to seat & not crimp.

Unless you are using a Lee dead length seat die,put an empty casing in the shell holder and raise the ram,put the seat die in the press and back the seat stem out, screw the die body down on the casing till the crimp shoulder bumps the case mouth then back it off 1/2 to 1 turn and lock it down.Now your ready to adjust the seating stem.

If it's happening during crimping, then consider a Lee factory crimp die. I was having case crushing problems with my 460 mag and 44 mag when trying to get the max roll crimp with my RCBS die. I bought the Lee FCD and because you can tell from looking through the top (see instructions) when the die is at full crimp, you'll never crush a case. Good luck.

If you are using bullets that have a crimp canalure, you need to crimp slightly. As above, screw in the die until you feel the crimp ring touch the case. After you seat a bullet to where you want, then turn down the die slightly each time until you get the amount of crimp you want. Then set the lock ring.
