A couple of weeks ago Mrs. Fl-NC got a nasty old fashion cold (not of the "newer variety" that was supposed to be a extinction level event) so she was on the couch and not doing much for a few days. Between spending time keeping her comfortable, etc, I was able to get all kinds of "busy work" done. I decided to get every knife I have out of every tool box, box of hunting stuff, vehicle, night stand drawer, etc. It was quite a pile of knives that had collected- versus me purposely collecting knives. For the last several years, I have been giving some of my older better knives I don't use any more away mostly to my son- not that he hunts or even carries a knife very often, he just likes them. Mrs. Fl-NC received my old USA made sharpfinger to keep in her hunting stuff. I gifted a Kershaw national wild turkey federation knife to a volunteer who LIVES for turkey hunting at a charity-run turkey hunt last weekend. I gave a well-used bench made I used on a deployment to a friend who is an avid collector/historian of SF and sniper equipment. I am trying to give them away to people who enjoy/will use them, because I have way too many. I am keeping the ones I actually use for various purposes, including some of the cheaper ones that live in the tool chest or in the truck console, and my higher end ones like my Randall and Spartan knives. Is anyone else doing this?

No, but I should. I have amassed a small boatload of various knives over the years and I certainly don't need them all.

I could probably give away a couple dozen to some responsible individuals who would appreciate it and still have more than enough left for my meager lifetime. Trouble is finding people who would truly appreciate it. I'd just as soon keep them in my knife drawer if they won't.

As with guns, the second best thing you can do with a good knife is put it in the hands of someone who will use it and knows the difference. I don't have fancy knives but have a few that are quite capable. Many eventually find their way into the hands of friends and family who can use and appreciate good knives.

This, 1000x this. I have a few knives that I would consider high-dollar, but I'm probably going to sell some of those off. I'm a terrible collector and can only imagine what I would do to the value of some of them by using them.

A buddy of mine has been carrying a rather poor excuse for a knife so I gave him one of the extras I had lying around.

I am prepared to do it again.

Other than that, I don't really give them away to often.

I also don't have nearly as many as done if you guys!

I have a lot of knives (except perhaps compared to hso), but I've almost certainly given more away. If I get a knife that's not a Spyderco, there's probably a 2/3 chance I'll give it away.

That reminds me. I have a Kershaw and a Spyderco ARK I need to get out to a couple friends...

The stages in life as priorities change factors in too. Have been clearing accumulations the past 7 years with the main premise being that if it is unused it can go. I enjoyed the time hunting items down though at this stage, thinking of the $ spent I wonder if it really was worthwhile. These days I desire simplicity and the minimalistic lifestyle certainly eases the mental side of clutter.

I know of guys that buy about 8+ factory knives/month. They constantly shop and spend $ because they have it. One aspect may be psychological through these type of purchases.

I like to give away things with meaning to the recipient. And vice versa. For example I gave my grandson my .30-06 Remington 760 a few years back. It's all he hunts with and that makes me feel great.

He gave me a nice Case knife for Christmas this year and it hasn't missed a day in my pocket ever since. I know that makes him feel good too.

Giving nice things to good friends and family is a true joy.

I’m culling out lots of stuff. Old stuff from my childhood. Knives. Guns.

my kids will all get guns that are important to me. Engraved with my name. Sentimental stuff. And a couple hood working, carry guns each.

But, they are not gun guys.

A good friend of mine died at 99. It took the family 2 months to cull through all his crap. And, I’m sure, a bunch went in a dumpster.

I would rather sell stuff I have now and convert it to cash, or preferably, gold and silver that I can pass on to them. Rather than them try and figure out what every trivial piece of junk I own might be worth. That old S&W model 10 in mint condition is worth, let’s say $400. I haven’t seen it or touched it in 20 years. If it winds up with some rust on it, it’s worth $200.

Silver dollars won’t rust. Just saying.

I’ve used the phrase before. I feel like I’m controlled by my possessions. And, I don’t really like it.

I’ve given away a ton of pocket knives. The Boy Scout troop is a great idea!

I have given away as many as I have purchased and plan on giving even more away. It.’s fun to gift. Just texted my son to tell him to come over and grab any .22 I have except the CZ. I have 20 .22 rifles. Got another yesterday. I have given him three knives already this year.

Hi, it's me, your friend!

I've got a not small collection of knives that I've been getting to whittle down as of late. Sent a few decent but nothing fancy pocket knives to some buddies, sold my bakelite AK bayonet to a buddy that had an otherwise complete bakelite set of furniture on his rifle.

I've still got all the knives I need, but if I move a few more I might start picking up a few that I'd like to have.

I had a brand new paramedic partner, decades ago, and when I discovered she had no knife, I rolled my eyes, unlaced mine from my boot (some CRKT fixed blade with a skeleton handle wrapped with paracord - common in the day but I can't find it on their website now) and gave it to her.

As far as I can recall, that's the only knife I've given away. They're just tools to me, so I've never bought any beyond what I thought I'd need.

We had a young guy working the Rental Dept. with me at "the depot" didn't have a knife.
Seemed like a nice kid so I gave him an extra SAK that I had. He quit a month later to be an Uber driver. o_O
Oh well, at least now he has a good pocket knife...
That gift will keep on giving, no matter his station in life.

There's a Friday Knife Nuts Lunch Bunch that met yesterday and I broached the subject of "thinning the flock". After they'd returned to the table having recoiled away gasping "What have you done with HSO!", "Are you MAD!", "Get thee behind me demon!" we had a more or less reasonable discussion (I say less with them having returned only to the opposite side of the table).

Everyone, but one guy, admitted to giving a knife away from time to time. I give a knife away at every show I set up at, but we talked about the same ideas here. I pointed out the restaurant owner that was making our food and serving us had sons in Scouts. One was making Eagle this week and I'd donated a Becker "Tweener" to give to him and a precious Victorinox Master Craftsman. I was certain we could scrape together a few Moras to donate to the troops and they muttered some sort of affirmative (except that one guy).

I’ve given a few away and sold a few. I still have more than I need. I primarily get by with a Delica, Cold Steel Voyager, and Kershaw Random Leek. The Delica will get used until it’s a toothpick. The others I could part with if the right circumstance arose.
