Cuomo, Senate GOP roll back some provisions of SAFE Act

Updated July 10, 2015 9:38 PM

By MICHAEL GORMLEY [email protected]

ALBANY -- In a rollback of key provisions in his landmark gun control law, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo agreed Friday to suspend sections of his SAFE Act covering ammunition sales.

Under the agreement with State Senate Republicans, New York will suspend its efforts to require background checks for ammunition purchasers and to create a database of buyers.

The state also will lift the ban on Internet sales of ammunition under the SAFE Act.

No need to repeal at all; just get the bans on pistols/firearms lifted next. Then the mag ban, and by then the free states should have done the heavy lifting as far as permitless/shall-issue carry for you :)

At that point, we can work together on the AWB, purchase permits, and other baloney. Baby steps.

I do love how SAFE appears to be closely tracking the '68 GCA (in which strict ammo regulations quickly proved wholly unworkable and were abandoned)

it turns out that the ban on internet sales of ammunition except through an ffl remains in effect.

This is not a victory. This is simply their way of saying those requirements are the moral equivalent of unobtainium and that their poorly thought out and improperly vetted and implemented requirements are not feasible in the real world

I'd think it's because every lawyer they consulted said this violates X,Y,&Z laws, like interstate commerce, and they figured they'd remove it before spending a lot of money on a losing proposition and looking like tools... this way it's not a political victory for 2A, or an anti- loss.

Hard to believe in America that some places are so draconian as to have background checks and data bases for ammunition purchases.

Boy that sucks for New Yorkers. It seems as if NYC holds the rest of the state hostage with their silly laws.

In the 80s when I had my FFL, even .22lr was logged in and out - that was Federal, not a state requirement
