I would like to obtain about FOUR identical fitted cases for the old Fiala Model 1920. If you're not familiar with this gun, it's a pistol action with 3 various length interchangable barrels and a detachable walnut buttstock. Overall size is 20 1/2" X 7" X 1 3/4" with two small latch-type locks, a simple leather handle in center, covered in black leatherette, lined with purple velvet.

I can furnish exact-size templates for interior pieces which have unusual shapes and detailed photos of any parts such as latch-locks and handle.

Do any of you THR posters have any recommendations which would help me obtain these cases? Below is a photo of what I need. Thanks in advance. -45Broomhandle

Fitted CASES

There is a guy down in Texas that does cases, as to whether or not he can provide just what you need I cannot say. If there is an interest, mail me direct, or search on GB-- he posts some hand gun cases there. I have bought some stuff from him off e-bay and can say Tom is an upstanding guy, That is a fine looking piece by the way, :D

I suggest you look at companies that specialize in producing custom-fit, ATA-approved flight cases for musical instruments. Anvil and Calzone spring to mind.

Anvil will do it. Most of the resellers of Pelican cases will do custom foam interiors, too. I have off-the-shelf SKB cases, so I don't know if you should go straight to SKB or find resellers to mold the interior.

Many Thanks For All Your Help

I have briefly visited each of the web sites mentioned above. Your help is gratefully acknowledged. Now I have to put together a comprehensive request to email to each of these suppliers. The main thing I note is that they offer very modernistic transit-type gun cases built for some heavy duty travel. What I'm actually looking for is a reproduction of what was probably considered "Top-Of-The-Line Technology" back in 1920.

I have one of my sets, which came to me without an original case, housed in a very nice aluminum carrying case from Guide Gear which was a Christmas gift from a family member. It's a fantastic, foam lined case to carry a bunch of guns to the range in, but the little Fiala looks totally out of place in such a posh, modern nest.

With proper templates (furnished by me) these four cases could be turned out very quckly by an experienced woodworker from a good grade of 1/4" plywood, The completed box would then be covered with black leatherette, and the interior covered in purple velvet.

Probably the most difficult task would be in finding similar lock-latches. Carrying handles are VERY simple, shaped pieces of leather, inserted into small, metal bands at each end. Nothing fancy, but very effective. Detailed photos of the original lock-latches, handle, and hinges can be furnished with exact dimensions. The hinges are simple, short, brass piano hinges.

The oriiginal Fiala cases are just "Plain Jane" utilitarian carrying devices - nothing fancy. All I would need to make this a DIY project is the proper tools, some woodworking talent, some free time, and no COPD breathing problems.

Unfortunately....

Thanks again. 45Broomhandle

Here's a line drawing from a Fiala (while under Columbia Arms Co. ownership) catalog. It may give a better idea of what I want built.

E-mails on the way to builders

Have sent an outline of what's wanted and now awaiting some replies early in the week. Probably have to send more details of construction in order to get a solid estimate. Will let everyone know when I've heard. Thank you all for your help.

By the way, have any of you noticed that Pacific Canvas has brought out a wooden, velvet lined, fitted case for the Mauser C-96 .45acp Shansei pistol? Just under $90 with shipping. Gotta' get me one of those for my... 45Broomhandle

Yes, there IS a place for all of God's creatures: right next to the potatoes and gravy.
