I have been working on this Hi Power for sometime. It is pretty much full house. Final assembly and tuning and it will be done. I was just too excited about the excellent Tripp hard chrome that I could not resist posting before it was finished.
C&S sear and type II hammer
C&S extended safety
C&S extended slide stop
Frame to slide tightening
Full accurracy and liability work
4 lb trigger
C&S Combat trigger
Novak bar/dot tritium sights
Hard chromed mag tubes for two 13 and one 17 rounder
Pretty much anything and everything that can be done to a high power short of a Barsto barrel.
Front bushing was thinned to allow for stippling and then silver soldered internally for strength.

Thanks to Virgil Tripp for an outstanding hard chrome finish.:D

Enjoy!!

Jess

Nice.

Really very nice. I've never seen that much stippling on one gun before. Lots of hours banging away with the brass hammer.....

I particularly like the stippling on the hammer end of the slide. Makes it very distinctive. Congratulations and a rousing "Good On 'Ya", projects like yours convince me that JMB qualifies as a higher power.

Jess,

Would you be so kind as to upload the pics here to THR. The webfilter here at my deployed location allows me to access THR and some firearms sites, but not others. Unfortunately your website is blocked :( . I've enjoyed seeing your work and photography (both excellent by the way) when I'm at home and not stuck to the Gov't comps. Thank you in advance.

Just gota ask..

Deez, thats pretty work. But, I just have to ask you about the slide to frame tightning. Since the BHP slide is kinda thin and doesn't have much mass, how do you go about tightening the slide w/o risking the possibility of cracking the slide?

I'm not being critical here and mean no dis-respect, but from what little I think I understand about the BHP, slide tightening and lowering of the rails aren't modifications thats recommended for the High-Power.

Again, not being critical, just curious.

Thanks,

salty.

There is a process for the HP that is different than the 1911 for tightening the frame to slide fit. Most of the HPs are pretty good as far as the frame to slide fit, some are not. And I am going to give you a very vauge answer. There is a very safe way to snug them up that does not risk the rails nor the slide. And it does take making and buying some not too cheap tools. This is one of the times that I will resist giving a blow by blow of how I do it in the interest of protecting some of my "proprietary" work. Other smiths also have ways that are nearly the same as what I do, and some that are different than what I do. I am sorry if that seems a bit smug on my part, but I would rather not get into a lengthy discussion of whether or not it is safe, or the techniques used. I leanrned from someone that does it the "old school" way and it my own modification of a C&S method and the 1911 "bang and squeeze" method. If you are interested, contact me off line and I can point you to one of the tools that I use that I have modified for use with the HP. It is not cheap, so it would not make sense to use it for one gun. Again, most of the HPs just get a bit of "snugging" and won't get as extensive of work as a 1911 might so there is not as much risk at all.

Thanks Deez...

Thank you sir.

I don't plan on doing any work that I'm not likely to have much success with. I was just curious. I've had an opportunity to buy BHPs that were advertised as being 'tightened, and hand lapped to the slide' but passed 'cause I'd heard that tightening and lowering was likely to lead to frame cracks.

What little that I think I understand about the BHP, I've gotten on the 'net. No 'smithing experience whatsoever on my part. I even managed to mis-fit a Kart 'E-Z Fit' barrel to the second lug rather than the first, so my 'smithing abilities leave a lot to be desired.

If you don't mind though, I'll send you an e-mail and ask for a brief explanation of just whats involved so the next time someone offers a BHP thats been 'tightened to the slide and hand lapped for fit', I'll have a general idea of that worthy gent is talking about.

Who knows, I may be able to ask an intelligent question or two of the potential seller.

Thanks,

salty.

No problem. Would be happy to provide that information. You are right, there are discussions and opinions out there on what can be done. And also right that they cannot be beat on and pinched like a 1911. As I said, they can be "snugged" and tightened, but not like a 1911. Just like the fact that the front bushing cannot be changed unless you go through a lot of work by replacing the front with something else. Most of the HPs that I have worked on really don't need that much if any tightening. Barrel replacement and some tightening is the way to go if you want more accuracy from a loose gun or barrel fit that is too loose.
