Custom Rifle caliber delimma

I must admit that the 6.5x06 looks interseting. And yes, I agree that it seems kinda off to have a rifle built in a caliber that you can pick up off of the shelf for a quarter of the money. The good thing is it's only gonna cost me around $2000 to $2500. Which is a lot of money for an ol' country boy to spend on a rifle (custom or not).

i have a krieger on one of my ar's... it shoots very nice. i think my preference is for lilja or shilen, though.

I know two guys that got prarie dogs at 1,000+ with 6.5-06's. That or the 284 case. Do you want short/fatter or the old standby '06? Brass is real easy for either one. I suspect in the real world there's not a nickle of difference.

Top if off with a 6.5x20 VX III or get really crazy and get a 6x18 Swarovski. Nice stock...McMillan maybe...Set trigger down to a few ounces for target work...

Ouch...especially if that's not with a good scope. Are you SURE you don't want to check into that custom .308??

My dad has an old Rem M-722 in .257 Roberts, and it is the most accurate sporter I've ever shot...1-hole groups @ 100 are the norm! That being said, I have always wanted a Win M-70 featherweight, and for years, I had planned to get one custom-shopped to .257, but since I don't handload, the limited availability of loaded ammo in these parts worried me a bit. Dad said he'd have gone 25/06 if he'd been smart, and it also makes sense from the standpoint of being able to walk into Mom & Pop's general store in Upper Duckwater, Montana and buy ammo for it. Then, at the end of the day, what do I get my M-70 in? 25WSSM... (love it, BTW)

one thing to keep in mind on custom 98's - feeding can become a real issue for some chamberings. things like the 284 and its wildcats (25-284, 6.5-284, etc) and other sa chamberings can be very difficult (read: expensive) to get to feed properly. another issue is bolt-face diameter. if the diameter of the head of whatever cartridge you pick isn't close to the mauser's bolt diameter, you'll be in for some bolt work (which can also get expensive).

I built a 98 Mauser into a nice long range rifle in 6.5x55 Swedish, worked beautifully, works on varmints or anything bigger. One thing to recomend the 6.5 cal. is the great selection of bullets available, which can't be said of the .25.

No, that is rifle only. But, I get to stand next to him and watch everything. That is the cool part of being buddies with a gunsmith. The price is mainly parts, he isn't gonna charge me much for the machine work.
