Customizing AK 47/74 Project

I'm retired and looking for a project that will keep me from tagging along with my Mrs. when she goes shopping. I'm a shooter, (Trap, Skeet. Rifle & Pistol).
I'm thinking about acquiring an AK platform, $400-$600 (Saiga, Bulgarian, Yugo, etc?) to start with and continue to improve on.
So I'm open to all suggestions.
 
If you're wanting a project a Saiga AK is a great place to start. They come in 5.45x39, .223, 7.62x39, .308, .30-06 (hard to find), .410 shotgun, 20ga, and 12ga. You might want to check out the Saiga-12 forum.
 
My WASR has been fun to customize. I've added a muzzle break, front handguard with rails and a reflex sight all for under $100
