i'm sure this has been addressed before but here it goes again: why are some cylinders (.454 casull) not fluted? it would be easy to say simply "for strength" but i have seen fluted and unfluted cylinders of the same caliber before. must have something to do with strength or capasity or both?

Fluted/nonfluted is basically an aesthetics/weight/cost decision. It seems to add little functional strength. Fluting can make a cylinder marginally lighter, can make it look cooler (either by fluting or not fluting) and not fluting can save on production costs.
