Hey guys, I recently came into a Hawes Western Marshall 44 magnum revolver.

It shoots fine with 44 specials, but when firing magnums, the ((what I call the cylinder pin)) pin that holds the cylinder in the gun comes loose of flies out!

Is this fixable? How can it be fixed?

Thanks guys,

L

I would start with mnrivrat's suggestion. It retains with .44 SPL but backs out with the heavier .44 Mag recoil so I would start there.

Maybe if a kind moderator sees this they will maybe move it to the Gunsmithing and Repairs section as it may fare better there.

Remove base pin and be sure there is no gunk build up in the cut out where the retaining pin rides. Check to be sure that the retaining pin ( part #17 in the above link) is all there and assembled correctly. You can stretch the spring a little to add some tension. When reinstalling the pin be sure you feel it click into place when you push it forward. You should be able to see the end of the pin flush with the frame under the hammer when the hammer is cocked. Aftermarket springs are available from Wolff, but my bet is part 17 is not tight right now.

check the nut on the base pin latch assembly. it should not be peened, rounded or damaged in any way. replace the whole assembly if it is. fwiw

I have seen two Hawes guns with the base pin latch hole drilled in the wrong place in the frame. If you got one of those, there isn't much you can do about it except use a locking base pin with a set-screw in the head.
