I feel like getting a new .22 and I've heard good things about CZs in general. My Savage 64 is an alright rifle but I find the feeling of working a bolt to be more satisfying than a semi-auto, and I'd like to have a .22 with iron sights and the Savage just has a scope that came on it and no sights. I really like the looks of the CZ 513, and the price is low. What do you say? Any owners of this rifle here? Opinions?

there are very good entry level rifles being made out there; marlin and savage both do a great job. So does remington. But for a rifle that will never go down in value, looks good, is made good, has a massive bolt compared to other 22's, and is very accurate to run with the big boys, the 513 is proly the best entry level rifle being made right now.

Sounds like a yes then. Soon as you said massive bolt, I was sold. It'll have to wait until next month...I already blew October's gun budget on a K31 and an Enfield.

I second the ranger's opinion on CZ. However, for about 80-100 bucks more, you can get the CZ 452 Lux. There's nothing wrong with the 513, but there are things better about the Lux.

You mentioned Iron Sights . . . The 452 Lux and 452 FS (Full Stock) have without question the best irons in the industry apart from aperature sights. The front sight adjusts elevation for sight-in, the rear sight for windage. Once set at 25 yds, the rear sight adjust accurately for ranges out to 200 yards in 12.5 yard increments (25 yard increments viewable on the tangent). All you do is depress a detent on the rear sight blade and slide the rear sight to your desired yardage. This sight was my reason for purchasing my my first CZ . . . I now have 4 452s (not all have the irons). Two buddies traded up from the 513 to the 452 after shooting my Luxes or FS . . . within a month . . . JUST FOR THE SIGHTS. The 513 has a standard staircase rear adjustment.

The Lux also has a longer barrel . . . longer sight plane. The Lux has a Turkish Walnut stock . . . the Basic has Beechwood (absolutely nothing wrong with).

You won't go wrong with the 513 ($270) but you won't regret the extra money paid for the 452 Lux or FS, either ($370, $420 respectively). Also, if you don't mind the Beechwood stock, the 452 Training Rifle (AKA Special) has all the features of the Lux for $320. Prices are from Bud's Gun Shop http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/63

Spend the extra money and get the lux. I had a 513 that I got for my son. Shot good, but did not feel near as nice as the lux. Traded it off after a couple of months and got another lux for my son. Have not regretted the trade. Trigger on the lux feels better and the sights on the 513 are not near the quality of the lux.

My daughter I will start on the scout and then go to the lux. I will skip the 513 the second time around.........

If you are going to scope it get the 452 American. Any cz is well worth the money though.

The American is a fine rifle . . . I have 2 (3 if you count the one I gave my father). However, you mentioned that you wanted iron sights. The American is "scope only". There are no irons on the gun, and unless you're willing to drill and tap or cut dovetails, there's no way to mount any.

My buddy just dropped by to tell me about Sunday at the range (I was hunting). He was shooting aluminum cans at 125 yards with his 452 FS. He drew a crowd when they realized he was shooting open sight . . . off hand . . . standing. Again, the 513 is a fine little rifle. The 452 with adjustable irons is better.

What's the deal with the sticking-out magazine on the Lux in this picture? I didn't see any other pics of that rifle with the magazine like that.

#1 . . . that looks like the Special/Training Rifle. I can't always tell. I've been corrected a couple of times . . . anyway

#2 . . . that's the 10 round magazine. The 5 rounders, steel or poly just barely protrude beneath the stock . . . just the base of the mag.

#3 . . . (and second answer for which you didn't ask) Out of 50+ mags for the 452, I've yet to find one that does not function properly. The 10 round only comes in Poly (plastic), but the 5 round comes in steel and poly. I like the steel, but I buy the poly when they're on sale . . . they all work.

The ten rounders I have caught on things while hunting, but not often. I use the 5 rounders, regardless. Standing, I like the 10 rounders . . . would like a 50 rounder standing. I bench shoot off a Caldwell Dead "something" Bag. Some days, the 10 rounder barely clears the bench. Most days, it doesn't clear the bench and acts like a fulcrum . . . don't like that.

Oh, I didn't mention the Ultra Lux, before. It has a 28. something barrell and the rear tangent goes out to 300 yds. They have a beechwood stock like the one you pictured. They're usually a little cheaper than the Lux. Longer sight plane and an extra 100 yd sight adjustment. I've been wanting one but haven't talked my self into it yet . . . I will though.

Most of my posts here have been regarding my 452s. I really shoot them a lot. I have even more rimfires from other manufacturers. I can say with confidence the CZ 452 or 453 is the best rimfire out there under $500. Anyway, my experience with the sights, mounting optics, triggers, groups, all that stuff I've posted to this forum.

I know they're ugly sticking out like that but they function well and Savage along with other manufacturers who use inline/single stack mags look just as ugly. I've found 5 and 10 rounders useful depending on situation.

Just buy a bunch of each and don't look at the gun from the side :)

I agree with everything said above, I myself hate any rifle that does not have open sites, and the more adjustable, the better. The lux, will run with open sites, as well as others will, with a scope. So if you have the extra 100 bucks, then this is deff the way to go .

I recently got a CZ 452 American from Budsgunshop ( $366 delivered, can't beat it !! ) and though it seemed to need a spell to break in and find it's favorite ammo, it's now a tack drivin' little mo-fo !!! I absolutely love this rifle, and am bound and determined NOT to become one of those nutbars that just have to have another CZ, and another, and another.......:D

Spend the extra money and get the lux.

No need to go to the Lux level. The Training Rifle will do for slightly less money. (Same gun as the Lux but with beech instead of walnut. Both better than the 513.)

Another vote for the Trainer, unless you absolutely have to have the pretty wood. It has everything you need and nothing you don't.

Not that I'm offended by your statement or anything . . . 452 FS .22WMR, 452 Lux .22WMR, 452 Lux .22LR, 452 American .22WMR, 453 American .22LR . . . and 452 American .22LR given to my father. Still . . . 527 Lux .223, 550 Lux .308, 12 GA Ringneck, 28 GA Bobwhite.

But then, that's just 10 out of 118.

nutbar out . . .

. . . except for pretty wood :D. Actually, I have seen some pretty Beech stocks. Rays appear more readily on Beech than they do on even American (Black) Walnut. Still, Beech stocks are stained to appear dark, Walnut is dark naturally or steamed to turn sapwood dark. I envy the guys who can look at a rifle purely for function, but I cannot. I have Luxes cause they're pretty. My FS is not my favorite rifle, but it has gorgeous wood . . . that's why I bought it, that's why I keep it. Shoots well, too. Anyway . . .

In my defense, I did mention the Trainer/Special in my first post. And really guys . . . it’s OK that your guns ain’t as good as mine . . . nasty ole trainers :neener:

It is impossible to resist the Force.

With the CZs, you get both the Force and a good blaster by your side.
