I've been wanting a .308 bolt action rifle for a while. After a lot of research I decided that the CZ-550 American would best suit my needs.

Mauser action, 24" bbl, set trigger with adjustable pull setting inside a very nice wood stock. I had the kitchen table FFL I use order one and he's gonna put a 3-9X40mm Nikon Prostaff Staff scope on it and boresight it. I should get it by the end of the week (I hope).

Then it occured to me that all the product literature didn't mean squat. What really mattered was what do users think of the 550 American.

I know CZ makes fine weapons. I own 2 CZ-75's already and have fired the CZ-452 and the CZ-527 carbine. Fine weapons all. I'm not really worried but:

I don't have any experience with the 550...

Who out there has a 550 American and what do you think?

I have one in 6.5x55.
My only gripe is that the stock inletting wasn't done too well.
The bolt handle was contacting the stock and it was contacting the barrel on one side.
After some minor hand fitting it's perfect.

I would like one in 6.5x55 as well, but would prefer the Lux model if I could find one.

I just visited a friend in Kentucky this past week and had a chance to shoot his CZ 550 Full Stock in 9.3x62mm. I was really impressed with it. He said that it first came with an ugly, hershey-bar finish on the stock. He removed the factory finish and refinished with Tru-Oil. There was quite a pretty piece of walnut buried under the original finish.

As a matter of fact, I liked the rifle so much that I'm planning to get a CZ 550 Full Stock in 6.5x55mm.

I put a 550 full stock in .308 on layaway and I can hardley wait to pick it up!! Has a very light tiger strip tint to the finish. Not very noticable, but present. As far as shooting, I have never fired one, but those that have seem to love or rave about them. The single set trigger is nice, and only a lawyer could hate it.

I have a 550 American in 6.5x55 as well. I love it. THere is very little I would change. Stock finish is nice, and there's no fit problems. I got mine from another THR member (though I think he only signed up to sell it) in unfired condition. I'm thinking pretty seriously thinking about getting one in 9.3x62mm. If they made the 550 in a lefty config I'd get one for my wife (the CZ Model 3 is available in lefty but it only comes in .270, .300, and 7mm WSM calibers - too much recoil for her, plus no set trigger on the 3's).
