I have a CZ 550 Varmint Kevlar 22-250 that I acquired for a 'project gun'.

My goal is to have a solid prairie dog rifle that will be able to shoot heavy bullets and reach out to 5-600 yards. (I know the current barrel is capable but I'm not interested in a 1-14 twist)

I will be sending it off to get rebarreled in something with a 1-8 twist (if I stay with a 22-250).

Is it worth considering a different caliber that will work in this action or will a 22-250 be fine for what I want. (I do reload).

Yep the 22-250 is about as good as it gets in a 22 cal Varmint gun. I think it's a good idea to go with a 1 in 8 twist barrel but what you have to realize is you probably wont be able to shoot anything under 50/55 grains and in my testing it's the under 50 grain bullets that give you the most explosive performance (ie: Red Mist).

My biggest piece of advice is to try the current barrel first. They are good shooters. I have a CZ and have to say the barrel is great. If it doesn't shoot well, then maybe look at a new barrel.

I would use a regular varmint taper. Maybe a heavy varmint, but it is up to you. If you will be carrying it a lot then go with the regular varmint taper. I don't think the brand matters too much. There are a lot of good barrels out there.

My CZ is not chambered in 22-250 so I can't help you there. If you don't hand load, go buy a box of everything and try them all.

If you are hand loading, I have heard well of 55 grain Ballistic Tip and 39.0 grains of Win-760, Winchester brass and a Federal 210 GM primer. Should clock about 3550 fps.
If you want to go light, maybe look at 40 grain Hollow point with 40 grains of Varget. Should be pushing 4,000 or so.

My CZ 550FS is NOT a 22-250, it's a 9.3x62, but it does shoot MOA. Definetly try several loads in it before going to the trouble of a re-barrel. Most of the CZ rifles are very accurate. If you are going to rebarrel it you might try the 6.5x284, as it is a 1,000 yard caliber that has won numerous long range matches.

I took my 6.5x55 Remington 700 and had it rechambered to 6.5x284 and it SHOOTS great.
