I think that the next one's a CZ 75B, but can't decide between a 9 or .40. My carry guns are usually a 1911 or .38 and I have no 9mm or .40 cal. (or any other auto other than my cmdr. sized 1911). It's kinda just to have a somewhat hi-cap auto.
Is the CZ generally originally made around the 9mm or is it fine for .40 as well? Any insight would be most welcome.
Thanks.

Have them in both and love em'

Carry? get the .40.... More power and thats how I like em'
Range gun and occasional carry? 9mm... Cheaper to shoot, less recoil and on that all metal frame you get very very little recoil.

You can't go wrong either way, since you have no 9 or .40 and starting fresh you are in a great spot.

Now with the ammo issues lately, you can find .40 all day long... if/when the ammo situation gets better, this gun in 9mm still packs a punch.

I had a CZ 40. Second pistol I ever owned. 22 being first. Ended up selling it and getting a CZ 9mm then a 1911. Might miss the 40 someday, but i have not yet.

Thinking hard about a 38 super being my next pistol.

Would +P 124 gr. 9mm require (or recommend) heavier than stock springs over standard 124 grs.?

I put a slightly heavier spring (made by wolff) in my CZ75B 9mm. I didn't do it just because I was shooting some +p stuff here and there, but that was one of the reasons. It still functioned just fine even with loads on the light side of the spectrum also.

Air Land & Sea,

Tough call. I have both. I personally never cared for the .40 . . . . until I got one. I was throwing away .40 range brass I picked up, and for some reason, started keeping it. Since I had some brass, I bought a NIB, CZ-40B at CDNN for $289.00 plus shipping and an FFL fee. What a deal.

That little 40B changed my perception of the .40. If you reload, the .40 is more versatile than the 9mm. The .40 can be loaded down to ridiculously manageable recoil levels. The little 40B is one of my only 100% reliable semi-autos; it has never, ever, bobbled, and it feeds anything. Amazing little pistol.

I say get the CZ-75/40. I now have 3 fourties (75B, 40B, 1911/.40). Rarely ever shoot my 9's any more.

I would choose the 9mm as it is the round the gun was designed for and I dislike the recoil characteristics of the .40. The gun's weight would mitigate much of this, however.

This forum has changed my view on this; I have both, but I have a new appreciation for the 9mm. I have a .40 G27 that I carry nearly daily, as well as an XDm .40. My new favorite shooter is the 9mm CZ 85 I picked up last week. I put 200+ rds through it today & am blown away with the ergos, accuracy & soft shooting.

Shooting it back to back with the XDm, groups were easily 1/3rd smaller with the 9mm. Very enjoyable to shoot.

This is probably another topic....but it seems that just about every pistol is better in the round it was designed for. I like the CZs in 9mm. If I was shooting certain types of competition, sure I'd consider the .40. A lot of .40S&W designs have stemmed from 9mm and .45ACP pistols so there's not too much choice in that matter. CZ's .45 on the other hand has a totally different feel to it and I don't really like their model 97 nearly as much as I like their 9s. I guess I'd say there's nothing wrong with the .40...but if it were my only CZ, I'd get the 9mm version.

That's sort of what I was thinking so the 9mm might be the one. On a related note, though, what guns were made specifically around the .40? Sig P229, ...?

I have a SP-01 in 9mm so I got a 75B in .40S&W, it’s among my favorite guns and has been flawless.

9mm. Cheaper, more reliable, more accurate than the .40..imho. Also, the gun was designed for the 9mm.

While originally designed for the 9mm, the SIG P226 in .40 is an excellent pistol. I think there were some changes made besides just "boring the barrel wider," such as the transition to the heavier, more expensive milled slide (from the previous stamped multi-part one).

I'm not sure if CZ made any similar changes to go to the 75 in 40. However, it's not the most popular 40 cal model out there, while the 226 in 40 is used by many federal and local law enforcement agencies.

If you're just looking for a gun to shoot at the range, then the 9mm should be perfect. I even use 9mm for carry (P250 with golden saber 9mm). But the 40 I keep in my bedside for home defense.

A slightly bigger hole than a 9mm, but at the expense of more recoil and extra $$ per box of ammo over the NINE.

However, either caliber will serve you well in a 75B.

9mm. No need for a .40. If you look at ballistics testing, .40 doesn't do anything 9mm JHP +P can't do.

I had my CZ in .40.

I found that .40 or .45 were my favorite calibers by going to a range and shooting the exact same XD 4" black gun in 9mm, 40, and 45. I liked the 45 the most, I liked the 40 too, and didn't like the 9. Couldn't hit much with it and found it to be more snappy than the 40 even.

Based on this I have gotten every gun I have in 40 or 45.

The recoil on the CZ in 40 is very manageable, it being an all steel gun. This should be a non-issue for most. The accuracy is good. The only thing I changed on mine when I had it was the extractor spring so it would work with steel-cased ammo (cheapest at the time).

Really though, if you're not talking SD, IMHO you can't go wrong either way.
