OK, the thread I started asking about Howa rifles pretty much confirmed most of what I already suspected. They sound like a great deal. So in my search for my first commercial centerfire bolt-rifle (I'll probably buy it by summer, I may buy a mil-surplus a month or so earlier) I want to throw my other options out there too.

I was thinking mainly about a CZ or a Howa.

I love my CZ pistols and their rifles seem to have at least as good a reputation. They have some good looking guns and some interesting bolt rifles. Their prices are quite nice for what you seem to get.

I am really impressed by the apparent quality and price of Howa. It also helps that S&W, Mossberg and Weatherby trusted them enough to use the exact action that is the Howa 1500 and put their own names on it at one point or another in the past. The accuracy seems incredible.

Well, I thought it was between those two but while looking around at a sporting goods chain (Sports Authority) the clerk put a Browning A-bolt in my hands and now I feel I need to consider that as well. The gun just seemed to fit me very well, the bolt was incredibly smooth and the throw (could be incorrect terminology, the amount of movement needed to open the bolt) was very short and fast. Even the polymer stock seemed quite nice (unlike so many polymer bolt-rifle stocks that usually seem to cheapen the rifle). The only problem is that it is fairly expensive for a first bolt-rifle and quite a bit more than the other options (over $550 plus scope).

So, my questions are:
-Price independent, what are the plusses and minuses of the various options?
-Price dependent, is the Browning really worth that much more than the CZs and Howas ($50-150 depending upon exact model)?
-If the A-bolt actually is a better gun, I could get one at Walmart. How much do you lose (if anything) with the Walmart models? I'll check to see how much less it costs there (I don't remember off hand since I wasn't really considering it at the time).

I know very little about the A-Bolts though I've always been impressed with them, I have no experience shooting one that I can remember.

I'd be happy with either the Howa or a CZ. Both are very well put together, have good triggers and actions, and generally accurate out of the box.

Looks like you have a pretty good list to choose from.

Go with the Browning---you won't be disappointed.

I've been through darn near every manufacturer's bolt rifle and the only ones I'll seriously consider buying anymore are Browning and Sako.

I've had Weatherby-Remington-Winchester-Ruger-Howa-Kimber bolt rifles and none of them lived up to the high price--performance expectations---accuracy claims---or just plain hype depending on the model.

Get a Browning and it will spoil you for anything else---nothing even comes close for the price.

Try various bullet weights--when you find the one it likes--it REALLY likes it. Or go with the BOSS system to use various bullet weights.

As a non-reloader the BOSS equipped Browning is a great idea (I have a Stainless Stalker in 7mmRM). You can dial it in for whatever ammunition that you find a good deal on. It's perfect if you get a .308 and a case of surplus FMJ for it. You can avoid the hassle of finding the best ammo for it, and just buy in quantity from the start.

The CZ is a great rifle. I've owned several in different calibers. All have been great shooters.

I second the motion for the Browning, I have two of them and could not be happier

I have a short action in 300WSM, and a long action in .270, and you could not ask for a sweeter rifle, and at around $500 for the hunter models they really are not that much more expensive

I have quite a few Browning rifles, I obviously like them or I would not keep buying them.
:D

I have never seen Brownings at Wal Mart! I have been in 4-5 different Wal Marts in the last week too. Must be an area thing?

I agree, the Browning synthetics are nicer looking and feel great.

Get a BOSS equipped one!

CZ!

Throw me in the CZ camp, mainly cause I'm a controlled round feed nut (didn't used to be). I'm also a sucker for the Mannlicher stocks.

The CZ will be as accurate as you'll ever need, unless you're shooting in long range competition. Weighs less too. And it shore is purdy. :D

* she recommends the CZ too ;)
