Turners in Southern Cal. is having a sake on the CZ 712 semi-auto 12 ga. for $299.99. This is a very low price for a semi-auto shotgun. Does anyone know if they are any good? Reliable? Any experience with them?

I suspected that's why you were asking. Count me in on the question, too, for the same reason.

It's made by Huglu in Turkey. I think this is a good thing, actually. CZ's Huglu-made double guns compare favorably with guns at double their prices, but I know little about their autoloaders.

Here's the same gun for $199 if you have a local FFL you can work with: http://www.interordnance.com/Mercha..._Code=INTERORDNANCE.com&Product_Code=HUGL1003

What I don't know is whether, when CZ began putting their name on the guns, the specs changed any. This is common in the world of Colt clones: they're made in a couple of factories, but some importers have different specs, so a Cimarron gun might have a better-tuned action than a Stoeger, even though they're both from Uberti.

This, BTW, is a steal, and the way I'd spend my $299:

You only get 3 shots for hunting anyway. 2 shots with different chokes and faster reloads are as good, and the shotgun is beautiful.

That sxs is nice looking - I'll have to try and find a shop that has one I can hold.

I've held the 20 gauge CZ-branded version of the SxS, and it is a truly nice gun. Wish I could comment on the 12.

CZ 720

Bought one for the wife, since my Mossberg 590 was a bit much for her on the skeet range. 20 gauge is perfect for her, less kick than the 12 gauge and the semi-auto takes up some of the recoil.

It fits her, having a shorter length of pull than the Mossy by an inch or so, and she finds it to be a very pleasant gun to shoot. She loves the beauty of that fine Turkish walnut stock, and I am impressed with it's fit and finish.

This gun is very reliable with every 20 gauge round we've tried in it so far, providing the gun is reasonably clean. I would hope a fine shotgun like this would be cleaned every 100 rounds or so. I experienced some problems when it got to around 200 rounds without a cleaning, which cleared up right away after disassembling and thoroughly cleaning.

Be warned, though, it is not the simplest nor most intuitive mechanism to disassemble/reassemble, and the manual supplied by CZ is not helpful except in the most general terms. Believe me, I am understating that last. CZ is very friendly and supportive (in an emotional way) but getting tech help over the phone is a problem unless you happen to be home during the day when they are open - weekends and evenings (when I am home and have the gun in my hands) they are off-line.

I truly believe it's the best buy for your semi-auto shotgun dollar. However, the maintenance is a tad tricky... I've got it figured out now, but I am not looking forward to next time all the same. Yes, I would buy another one, and I may very well buy a 12 gauge companion for it at some point.
