An antique damascus barreled gun can be proofed by a gunsmith to fire modern cartridges via having the barrels lined with chromium
Something smells funny about that idea. I'm not really qualified to say much though, but just lining the barrel I don't think would be enough.

Someone here have a wiki account that would care to fix it?

Hmmmmm

IIRC, the Damascus Steel and "Twist Steel" barrels were made for BLACK POWDER loads ONLY.

Maybe if you had a liner thick enough to reduce it down a gauge....MAYBE. But I am not willing to stand close enough to the shooter to find out firsthand. (12 down to 16, 16 down to 20, etc)

A chromium lining will do next to nothing to increase the overall strength of the barrel. Something definitely seems suspicious about that.

Teague in the UK will drill out twist and Damascus barrels and install a steel liner, then send it off for reproofing.Customer specifies choke, barrels look the same outside but the thing will handle modern loads. There were articles in Shooting Sportsman magazine about this.

About $1K per barrel,IIRC. IOW, it'll be an option if you have an old Purdey sitting around, but not viable for Uncle Zeb's Long Tom.

In my younger years I shot a 12ga damascus sxs that had a set of sleeves for 20 ga. That gun is still used by the grandchildren of the original owner. I never saw any one try to shoot it without the sleeves.
