So, after my thread asking what makes 1911's so special, some of the responses have gotten me to reconsider my stance on the 1911. The problem for me, is the availability and cost of the 1911.

I have a shop that sells Kimber, which would be my first choice, but is priced so high it is going to be very difficult to justify. At the low end, is RIA or Charles Daly which is the right price, but I don't really know what to think of the two brands. In the middle, is Dan Wesson.

My only other experience with Dan Wesson is an older .357 revolver which is incredibly sweet. Great fit and finish, accurate, and totally reliable. The 1911's I don't know much about. The gun feels tight and had a CZ feel to it, but I don't know much more beyond that.

Is the DW worthwhile? Am I better picking another? I need high value for every penny paid on this, as this gun is going to be a bit of a luxury.

Opinions?

I've purchased many handguns. Therefore take this statement as having some meaning please. The Dan Wesson I bought was the best value for the money of any new 1911 I've ever bought.

I own a Colt, an early Kimber, a Dan Wesson PM7 and am currently having a custom 1911 built.

If I were to buy a new 1911 and was looking in the $1000 + or - range, I would choose a DW over any other 1911 I have shot or handled. Last year I ordered a Springfield Armory 1911 at my local gun shop. When it arrived, I compared it to a PM7 in the dealer's case. I canceled the SA and took the PM7 home. I have never looked back on that decision.

DWs are well made guns with quality parts - dependable and accurate.

I don't know what you mean by "CZ feel to it", but the folks at CZ don't even lay hands on the DW pistols except for the few that get shipped to them for Cerakote. DWs are made here in the US by a very small crew of smiths and support personnel, and CZ is pretty much "hands-off".

DW represents the best value out there in 1911s right now. Fit and finish for a factory pistol is superb, and has even been improved this year. They have excellent customer service, and stand behind their product.

Unfortunately for those that are looking, word has gotten out, and they are about like the proverbial hen's teeth. More models and another batch of CBOBs are due out, but I don't know when.

Good luck in your search ;)

Tell me about it.

I've been ready to buy for the past few months and can't seem to find one.

I have a Dan Wesson PM-7 in 1omm and am happy, excellent trigger, very accurate, nice for the money. Takes a little shooting to loosen up, very tight.

I own three Dan Wesson 1911s and hope to add more in the future. Best value guns on the market, IMO. In fact, I sold a tack driving, 100% reliable S&W 1911 in order to afford my most recent purchase (2009 RZ-45 Heritage).

BTW. I would never spend my hard earned cash on any Kimber.

Today in this market, it simply doesn't get any better than Dan Wesson. My personal feeling is that Kimber is over-priced for what you get. Dw offers great pistols that do exactly what they are designed to do and they do it well.

Good Luck finding one, they sell quickly.

If you can't afford a semi-custom, DW is the WAY to go! I picked up a PM7 at Gander Mountain for $819 and it is VERY comparable to my Les Baer (and easier to clean). Great value!
