Is there any low cost way to try to darken a parkerized part on a rifle? I have a gas tube on an AK variant that is a lighter gray than the rest of the rifle which is very dark gray (almost black).

Just trying to see if there is a trick to try to darken it without getting it reparkerized darker. Thanks.

One of the nice things about park is that it will absorb oil, and is designed to.

Rub some gun oil into it and let it sit, wipe off excess after a couple minutes. It will darken nicely, and provide excellent rust protection too.

Light grey park means it is too dry.

I'd really rather not paint it.

I'm going to try soaking it in some oil and see if I can darken it that way. If that doesn't work I'll pursue cold blue or shoe dye.

Thanks guys.

My local steel supply shop has a whole section of bottles that blacken/darken/change the finish of steel. If cold blue doesn't look right, might give that a shot.

I've used cold bluing on parkerized AK's before for the same reason (Not gas tube, but receiver). Worked great... Still looks good. (De-grease with break clean, I used non-chlorine) research or test in discrete area first.
