What years did remington start checkering the stocks, and go to the wider forend on the 870's? I found one without checkered wood, and with the old "Ithaca 37" foregrip (I call it this, due to it looking like a ithaca 37 foregrip, horizontal cuts) And it seems like its one of the first years of production, metal has a nice patina to it. The gun is about in 70 percent condition, due to metal finish wear (Age not abuse) They want 220 dollars for the gun, what are these early wingmasters worth?

I'm not Dave (Chorus: Dave's Not Here!) but...

...a 'corncob' forearm on an 870 makes it early to mid, maybe late 1950s or thereabouts IIRC. To make sure, call Remington at their toll free number ( 1-800-243-9700 ) between 8 and 5 NC time and work through the phone tree. One of the helpful staff will take the serial number and look up the year of manufacture of the gun for you while you're on the phone.

If you're looking at the old WM as a candidate for a stubby gun, I'd pass on that one. It's a little long in the tooth for surgery that radical, and you should be able to find a solid old model Express gun (w/o magazine tube dimples) for less $$ that will be a better candidate for SBSing IMHO.

I will confess to dealing with repeated temptation to paper one of the several Express guns here from time to time, especially back a few years ago when a certain company (CDNN) was selling off short factory barrels with 1-shot magazine extensions for a C note or so.

Lee - I'm not sure about all the specifics with the different model changes, but I've got an all-original 870 20ga with a corncob forearm which Remington confirmed was made in 1958.

I've not seen a corncob forend later than 1960,Jim, but call that number anyway.

However, the only corncob wood here is on Frankenstein. ca 1973. 870s are so easy to take apart and swap parts on that stuff migrates, especially on those 870s that live in groups, like mine.
