De-Escalation
By: Cody S. Alderson (01/27/2012)

We talk about ADEE as the 'school solution' here in ST&T, but few people ever discuss the whens, hows and whys of de-escalation. Here's an article that does...

De-escalation involves both physical and verbal techniques. There is a book called Verbal Judo by George Thompson. It has apparently inspired at least two websites, as well.

When is easy. Ideally, de-escalation should start before violence is even hinted at; de-escalation at its best merges with violence prevention.

Thanks - I had intended to include Verbal Judo in the links, but got distracted/overtaken by domestic events. (200 plus pounds of Fila demanding breakfast are hard to ignore)

De-escalation
There was certainly an opportunity for it, but none was used the way it sounded. Stopping completely was the first mistake.

I learned the hard way early in life that how one reacts can determine, to a point, how things escalate, or not. I flunked it early on, thus the lesson.

Some folks are quite good at it, while others just don't have the knack. I am in the middle somewhere.
