I bought 2000 rounds of Bulgarian heavy ball 7.62X54R in cans of 250 belted rounds linked together from ammoman.com for $99/500 delivered in cases of 2 metal cans. Ammoman said they were easy to de-link. Once I figured it out it was easy. You can't do it with fingers alone thought. At first I tried twisting them out. No joy. The links do not decouple either. So I got a Craftsman screwdriver and tapped a few out with the plastic handle. That was very slow and severely stippled the handle. I was careful to note that banging them out didn't cause any bullet set-back.

But this was too slow and ruining my screwdriver. I rummaged around in the workshop and found the perfect tool, a Craftsman "Robo-Grip". Putting the pliers over the bullet tip and under the top link popped the cartridges out gently and quickly. No bullet set-back occurred and only a few light scratches on the bullets when I got in a hurry.

Just 1750 rounds to go.

We can't have the guns that shoot ammo on belts or buy the ammo on belts, but I see .50 cal links at the gun shows all the time. Hmmm. What year was it manufactured?

Ah. I was thinking of ordering a can but in bold letters it said "NO BELTED AMMO SALES TO CA" Which means they wouldn't de-link it and then ship it here for the same price. Oh well.

Once bought Portugese 308 that was linked. Just took a fired case and placed mouth of fired case over bullet of linked round. Litely tapped with a hammer while supporting the adjacent round, and they came right out.
