Hello all,
I have been lurking around gathering information about reloading and decided to give it a try, many of you provided great information that helped in making my decision. I had decided on the RCBS Master Reloading Starter Kit,but then spoke to my uncle, a long time reloader, he had packed away his tools, he offered to sell me some of his old equipment. I was wondering if anyone would have any comment or opinions on some of this equipment since some of it has been around for ahwile. I had never heard of C&H before my uncle sat the press on the table. I will be reloading for 308 Win. This is what I picked up from my uncle for $100.
C&H "H" Type Press w/priming tool and case holder (308)
C&H Case Trimmer (hand crank)
C&H Die Set (35 Rem) w/Wilson case gauge
RCBS FL Die Set (308 Win) w/Forrester-Appelt case gauge
RCBS Case Holder (this seems to take differnet case holders that just clip in)
C&H Primer Crimp Swager
Redding Powder Scale (325 gr capacity with hydraulic dampening)
Lyman Ideal Powder Measure No. 55
Lee Powedr Measure Kit (13 scoops and slide chart)
2 - wooden case blocks

The boxs of some of these look older than I am, but all equipment looks in great shape. Couldn't pass it up for $100 to get started.

100$ ?? thats is a good starting point you can add from there. Do you hace a tumbler? calipers? reloading manuals?

There is nothing wrong with what you got or what you paid. It is a good starting point to learn the basics and develop your reloading methods. That press may be all you will ever need and if not it will be a good accessory to a progressive if you decide to go that way. I still use my 30 year old RCBS Rock Chucker in conjunction with my progressive press. I use the RCBS Rock Chucker for all resizing that required the lubing and for cartridges that I don't load over a 1,000 rounds a year like my 44 mag and 22-250 for now, but soon it is going to be switched over the the progressive.

C&H makes good stuff. You are off to a good start. There will be a few goodies you will want, like dial calipers etc. :)

The Lyman 55 powder measure is what Culver originally made his conversions on for the Benchresters. That design is still widely copied today. Neil Jones, Harrels, etc.

Yes ..... I already have "The ABC's of Reloading", Nosler, and Spear Manuals that I have read. And also looking at calipers along with some other itmes to complete things. I had definetly thought about a tumbler considering I havent spent a whole lot of money yet. I was wondering how necessary a tumbler would be at this point .............. Oh ........ I forgot to mention my uncle also threw in some old Hornady Manuals 4th Ed, Vol 1 and 2, so Im looking pretty good on manuals at the moment.

You need some dial calipers and a want a tumbler for sure. The inexpensive dial calipers work fine. Midway puts them on sale dirt cheap every now and then, as does Harbor Freight.

Midway had this one on sale for 9.99 for a while.

Harbor Freight usually has some on sale as well. I bought the 47257-5VGA for 15.99 on sale at the store near me. It is easy to read and works as well as my expensive calipers for routine measurements to the nearest .001.

Midway has this tumbler set on sale and many here have reported good success with the Frankford tumblers.

Thanks Walk ....
Im going to probably be ordering a few more items in the next few days . great info ..............
