I have a Mossy 500C, had it for ages, it's the one gun that's evaded my "tradeitin-itis", 28" Mod. AccuChoke barrel, 5 shot tube, and some really nice wood furniture, I bought it at least 20+ years ago, it was used but in mint condition, I haven't shot it all that much, as I've been more into handguns and rifles, but I can feel myself leaning more towards the shotgun side now as well
It's a great gun, 100% reliable, so reliable in fact that I forget it's there, I know it'll work every time, I trust my life to it (thankfully, I live in a low-to-nonexistent crime area, the most I've "killed" with it are clay targets)
That said, there are a couple of minor annoyances with it;
it only holds 5 shells
the barrel is too long for HD
the pump has a lot of side to side "rickety-ness" to it
That said, the pump action is buttered-teflon-coated-ball-bearing smooth...
I had been planning to get an 18.5" barrel for it, as that would solve my biggest annoyance with it, so I stopped by my LGS to check out the used/new barrels, while I was there, I spied another 500 that had just been traded in, it had "carbon-fiber-look" poly furniture on it, an 18.5" barrel, and most importantly, what appeared to be a 8 round tube mag
I took a closer look at it, it pointed well, felt comfortable, and there was just the slightest amount of surface rust spotting on the barrel, 000 steel wool would easily remove it without harming the bluing, it also had a far less "rattly" pump action side-to-side, however, the pump action was less smooth than my 500
Thing is, I'm not a fan of the poly furniture, and the barrel is cylinder bore, however, it *does* have the 8-9 shot capacity I like
I'm a little tempted to trade, I'd get a tighter pump and ?3? more rounds in the tube, but I'd lose my nice wood furniture and the versatility of two barrels (for now, i could always buy a 28" barrel for the poly furniture 500), plus, I have no idea of the reliability of that 500, mine is utterly reliable
So, I have to ask myself, is it worth it to gain three rounds of capacity, but lose the wood furniture and utility of two barrels? plus, I kinda' like the fact that this 500 has been with me the longest, I'd feel bad trading out of a gun I've owned for 20+ years, even if I haven't shot it that much, then again, the 8 shot 500's seem hard to find, this is the first one I've seen in a long time
My options are;
1; get the 18.5" barrel for my wood-furniture 5 shot 500
2; trade my 500 for the 8 shot poly furniture 500
Ideally a third option would be to trade the 5 shot for the 8 shot, then swap the furniture, but I highly doubt the LGS would do that, plus, I'd still be down a barrel (no 28" hunting barrel)
Hmm, what to do, what to do, is the extra capacity worth the trade....
