I just purchased a Colt Defender and a Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry II and would appreciate some input on personal defense ammo to eliminate trial and error and consequently wasting $$. I have read where 185 gr is better to use than 230 gr in a 3" 1911 because of possibility of hollow points not expanding properly with the 230?

I prefer 185gr ammo in the 3" 1911's. I really like the Corbon DPX or Taurus Hex ammo for SD in the compacts.

Slide velocity

On my Detonics pistol I have read that due to the high slide velocity, lighter bullets feed better.
The magazine spring can only push up a round at X speed and a lighter bullet has less inertia so it is able to raise up faster to meet the slide.
I do know that JHP 185's work better then 230 LRN in my gun.
If you can find a nice hot SWC in 180-200 that feeds well you should be well served. The bullet shape will damage flesh better then a unexpanded JHP.
I don't carry this pistol anymore.
