Just picked up a Dakin Gun Co 20ga Side by Side for $450. Nice shape with 26" barrels, coin finish side lock reciever, good looking wood to. Made in Spain by I assume some Basque outfit.

Anybody know much about these? Where Do I find what model?

Found some more info on this. It was made in 1957 by Gaspar Arizaga, Eibar, Spain. Can't find a model # anywhere. Some Arizaga shot guns were the early model Grulla before they started using that name.

Spanish guns are a really complicated field. Various families in Eibar form companies that go in and out of business, then the people turn up elsewhere. Guns range from just above junk with soft, non heat treated parts to stuff one small click below Purdey, etc.

I believe Dakin was a mid level maker. Parts of course, are nigh impossible.

I'd have a smith check it over for the usual probs. See archives.

If he/she gives a blessing, go shoot it plenty.

Knocked the cob webs out today with four rounds. Seems to handle ok with very little recoil. I will set it in the postal scale at work and see what it weighs. That scale doesn't mean I will go postal however.

Unfortunate, but true. I have an old Felix Sarasqueta that could use some wood. It used to be very pretty, all hand checkered excellent walnut. It banged around in the marsh and bottom of boats in a previous life to the point it ain't so pretty, now. But, by golly, it's still a shooter! Thing is unreal accurate with slugs, which is sorta weird, almost like a double rifle, but has mod/full choked barrels and no sights, just a bead. Still, it'll put 'em into 2" at 50 yards, though all you really wanna fire is one. Thing weighs a little over 6 lbs, maybe.

Some of those old Spanish guns were real bargains and great shooters, but like Dave says, they did turn out some junk. My guns was an FIE import, not expensive, but sure did look good and functions great. God help me if I ever need something like a firing pin, but heck, I don't shoot it much anymore. Steel shot laws retired it. I don't really like the thing on doves, too much choke and the gun never did fit me all that well, not enough drop in the stock.

Dakin was an importer

Dakin was an importer of various guns. Mostly shotguns. Their sxs's were manufactured by Union Amera of Eibar, Spain which eventually changed their name to Grulla. Grulla is one of the finest gun makers in Spain and probably the world. Many of Dakin's sxs were excellent mid-range guns with some sidelocks being high end. Now days these Dakin's are valued similarly to Union Amera's of that era. However a few "budget guns" were also imported.

Dakin also imported some semi-autos made by Breda, an Itailian maker and also imported a single shot trap gun made by Italian maker MAVI now Armi Salvinelli.

My understanding is that Dakin started in Kansas City then eventually moved to San Francisco. By the 70's Dakin stopped importing guns altogether and moved on to toy manufacturing of all things.

By the way, I own several Dakin's.

I have heard that some say KC and some say San Fran, mine doesn't have anything other than Dakin. There is not a city listed. I can't figure what model it might be either. The only numbers I can find that aren't related to proof testing, weight, choke and such is the numbers 531.

UnitMaster (or anyone else who might help)
I recently bought a Dakin 20 gauge SXS which sounds like the same model purchased by 72IH. It's a beautiful little gun that flies to the shoulder, but as with many of the Spanish guns I'm having trouble with the single, non-selective trigger. The first barrel fires fine but the second does not. The gunsmith who looked at it (and he is not a shotgun specialist) commented about the soft steel, but he said the primary problem appeared to be a sear that had been set at an incorrect angle by some shade tree artist; and was beyond his repair. I am currently searching for a replacement and wondered if you might have any suggestions, since you said you owned several Dakins. I have contacted but not heard back from some obsolete parts suppliers. Dakin's advertisements in the 50s and 60s referred to their complete inventory of parts, but the company is no longer in the gun business and I cannot find who purchased their inventory.
Gaspar Arizaga appears to have been at least a mid-level Spanish/Basque maker, if not a bit better. It had been around since the late 1800s and made some high-end shotguns, but it became part of the socialist Sp. government's DIARMS venture after Franco, and like the other 20 or so other companies involved, did not survive that experiment.
Jack O'Connor owned a Gaspar Arizaga 28 gauge, which he extolled, but he had its trigger completely replaced by the Miller Company in PA. Miller charged about $200 for trigger replacement at that time, but the cost is now $1,600; ruling out that option.
If anyone knows where you can find parts for this gun, useable substitutes or someone who can fabricate them, I would love to hear from them. I live in S. TX but if it's necessary to ship the gun out of state in order to get it put in working order I would do so. Thanks.

Photos, Dakin Gaspar Arizaga 20 gauge SXS

Here are some photos of the shotgun. Hopefully they will reproduce well enough to read the markings. FYI, I have an email into Bob's gun parts ( http://www.gun-parts.com/olddoubleshotguns/ ) has anything that would be fit, or could be fitted. I have also checked a variety of other sites and plan to call some numbers I was given at a recent gun show here in San Antonio. Just about all the Spanish guns of that period were built on the Anson Deeley system; meaning that parts made for that system might be at least close enough to modify. I am also looking for anyone that might be able to fabricate parts, or for anyone who might have a gun they are selling to part out. Obviously, an parts gun would need to have good sears, etc.
