I have been reading, posting, and emailing all over the place getting ideas for the perfect all the time holster.

I'm beginning to think it doesn't exist.

Maybe the answer is a "set" of holsters, each tailored to specific needs/occasions. I mean you wouldn't wear dress shoes to go hiking, or sneakers with a tux right? So maybe dressing for the occasion should apply to holsters as well.

What do you folks think? What do you use for different occassions and why?

I'll oppose El T.....

I have several different holsters. SOme IWB, some out, most all have same presentation of the grip. I even have a SOB holster though I neither like nor use it (at least not often)

All are in tactical brown dead cow hide,

I'll admit...

I'm poly-holster-ous. I like using different holsters for different occassions.

If I know I'm going to be bending over a lot, or getting a lot of hugs, I usually dress with more concealment (Smartcarry or pocket).

If I am just going to be driving to the grocery store and back, I'll dress for more comfort and speed (OWB with covering).

El Tejon, you and I are in the same general region (I'm a bit further south) so I am curious to your experiences.

Which holster are you using since you have found "the one"? How big a pistol are we discussing? In my case, a full size, and usually the same one. (Beware the man with one gun mindset)

Smoke, that is sorta what I'm talking about. Need to carry in the same location, but sometimes need IWB, sometimes need something that is easy on/off, etc.

Maybe I just haven't stumbled across the right one yet, what is right in one situation just doesn't seem to work for others. For example, holsters that work in the fall and winter, are just impossible during those humid Indiana summers.

As a maker of holsters...I can tell you some people do find the truely perfect rig for them.
But not everyone is that lucky.....

I get alot of requests for a "model xxx by dudes leather" and tweak it like this.....they have a favorite holster but want a tweak here or a tweak there....to make it perfect for there needs.

I honestly have 2 holsters I wear religously...the both put the gun in the same place for repetition/draw memory....one is an IWB and one is a pancake/belt holster. I could do the IWB all of the time...but I like the choice.....

Most people who get away with one holster for their everyday...every year carry....are in the same environment, dress and such, all of the time. This gives them the opportunity to find one that works for them and they stick with it.....

Just my .02$............Shoot well

My holsters generally fit into two, maybe three categories:

1. primarily CCW holsters: my Milt Sparks VeraMax2 and Watch-Six for the BHP and 1911. These have maximum "all-days" concealability.

2. ancillary CCW holsters / IDPA holsters: Milt Sparks NP-1. These can be used for CCW with the right clothes, and double as IDPA holsters.

3. game holsters. These are not suitable for carry and are used for IPSC/3Gun.

Thanks for satisfying my curiousity El Tejon.

Seems like I see a theme here. IWB and Sparks for the "all the time" crowd. El T, does the sweat sheild on the back really help, and does it interfere with the draw at all? Is it easy to snap on and off or do you have to undo your belt?

Zak, your #2 was my other scenario. Times when you can carry OWB, does one take advantage of the comfort offered by a good belt holster?

I have a Wilderness 1.5" instructor's belt and Bladetech UCH holster for my P7M8.

I also have a Milt Sparks sharkskin belt, holster and magpouch rig.

I wear the shark belt to work with my dress pants so put on the shark rig when I get off work.

I like the nylon and plastic rig better than my shark setup, but it feels wrong when I'm dressed kinda nice.

two basic designs that have stood the test of time are both bruce nelson designs (copied by most makers). they are his "summer special" IWB and his "professional" OWB. i prefer them with an 11 degree cant (i like the alessi GWH, iwb, and ACP, owb) and mine offer the same presentation.

these are both serious carry holster, carrying full sized pistols, which work in all environments (assuming you dress appropriately)

i also have a set (for various guns) of fobus paddle holsters for "casual carry" holsters for running around, going to the store, walking outside, back and forth to work. their major advantage is the ease of putting it on and taking it off. but i don't think of them as an everywhere, all the time, holsters...but they do get the most use in my life.l
