ive recently bought more ammo. though this appears different i figured it was the same. i shot a few this afternoon and this caught my eye.

the two all copper tips went all the way thru

the silver tip embedded itself and a steel core appears to be in it.

share your thoughts

this is 1/2" steel plate

They are likely steel core rounds, though not AP, and your 1/2" plate is a softer grade.

I have an improvised steel target that is an access panel from a paladin howitzer. It is 9/16" hardened steel. It still can be diveted by x54r steel core ammo at 100 yards, but nothing like what you are seeing.

You can determine country of origin by looking at the numbers on the case head. Ex. 21 is from Hungary, etc.

www.7.62x54r.net has a section that breaks down all the different surplus ammo out there.

As _N4Z_ mentioned, most mid 60's through late 80's 7.62x54R surplus ammo were steel core, and will give you the performance that the 1/2" plate shows.

As many are finding out with the flood of Mosins, it is a potent round regardless of it's age, and was on par with the '06 and 8mm milsurp ammo back in the day.

i love the ammo. its just plain badd @$$$ hahahha. i was just wondering. i didnt knew if i should put some to aside for a special occasion or not

Now finding those Bulgarian 180 gr Heavy Ball will even be more accurate. It has more kinetic energy and heads can turn.
