Dirty bullets

Greetings,

I just got lead bullets from a commercial caster and they are sticky. It looks like it is lube sticky. But that makes them look dirty and when I pick them up, my fingers get dirty (greyish).

Can I clean them by tumbling them a little bit in my corn media with a lot of 1"x1" cut paper towels? Will it hurt the lube in the groove? Any other solution or suggestion?

No, I wouldn't tumble them.

They probably have a dry lube applied in addition to grease in the grooves.

If you try to tumble them, you will most certainly get tumbling media stuck in the grease.

Have you considered buying a box of disposable latex or vinyl painters gloves.

Loading cast bullets is dirty business, no matter what they are lubed with.

I get my bullets from stonewall bullet co. His are sticky too. I just got used to loading them. It does not affect the performance of the bullet.

Putteral, mine are from him. First time I get those. What about the accuracy of those bullets with you? I plan to put the 9mm 125gr over 5.0 gr of Unique (Like I do with the bullets I got from two alpha and kead.)

I have shot 125gr Rn in my P95 with 5 grs of Power Pistol. great accruacy. Also use his 200gr SWC and 230 Lrn in my Charles Daly EFS and love them. I think you will love them too. Can't beat his prices. Never have had any leading with them.

My gun was getting really dirty/waxy in the breach face, feed ramp and extractor after a 200round range session. This would not be a big deal but I was concerned because I was taking a class with a round count of 500+. I was afraid that with the amount of curd that acquired in 200rnds, 500+ may cause malfunctions. I through the loaded rounds in my tumbler and they came out great. I know some don’t approve (others do) so I took appropriate precautions assuming they would detonate which they did not.

Lube is a mysterious substance designed to get lead through a barrel. Most folks feel a lube should be dry and neat. Ideal lubes are sticky sometimes and will make debris prevalent requiring the gun to be cleaned more often. An ideal lube will enhance accuracy and efficiency, decreasing pressure and probably not be all that attractive. Those of us that make our own lubes usually realize the sticky, soft lubes work the best. A commercial caster is not so concerned about accuracy as he is how the finished product looks and if it is represented neatly when he gets it. I'm much more concerned with a hard, waxy lube than a soft sticky one.

Tumbling loaded ammo to clean the bullets is one thing. It is harmless, and may actually do some good.

Tumbeling cast bullets after they are lubed, and before they are loaded, as Kestak ask about, is quite another!
