Hello,

I have several shotgun shells and bullets that I want to get rid of; there aren't that many, 25 tops.
What should I do?
I thought about taking them apart and burying the gunpowder, but I read that taking apart bullets is dangerous without the correct equipment; and I don't want to dish out my own money just to get rid of bullets that aren't even mine.

Advice please.

(sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I couldn't find anything close to general ammunition discussion)
(EDIT: I do not own any firearm whatsoever)

Easiest way is to just shoot them at the range. It would be best to have the right equipment if you are going to pull bullets. Shotshells, assuming they are plastic hulls, can be cut open and dismantled but then you still have to deal with the powder.

Find someone that can use them and give them away would be easiest.

I don't have any experience with firearms, nor do I wish to.
And I don't know anyone to give the ammunition to.

Thank you for the shotgun shell information, yes, they are plastic.
I'll just sprinkle it on my lawn, it is nitrate anyway, right?

I'd think that anything you don't feel comfortable disassembling, you could maybe turn it in at your local PD or fire department? I used some spilled powder on some house plants and they put on a real growth spurt!

Take them to a firearms dealer and see if they will take them off your hands, or ask your neighbors if they can use them.

Find a bridge over a big river.
Or a big lake.

I'l leave the rest for you to figure out.

Like Ranger 335V said, they ain't toxic and they won't explode later.

I worked in a gunshop for 6 years. Many times I would have a lady or sometimes a man bring ammo in with a question of how to dispose of it. Simple I'd say, give it to us, we'll dispose of it! Most were surprised we didn't charge for that service.

We'd sort it out, put it the back room for testing gun repairs, or trying to pick off those woodchucks damaging our berm! If it was compromised, we would break it down and toss the components in the fire barrel.

I would take it to a local range and give the rounds to them. Explain it just like you did here, and I'd be willing to bet that they'll take them off your hands without any qualms.

They will lose potency over (a loooong) time, but they won't become volatile so you don't have to treat them like they're dynamite. Think of it like disposing of motor oil after an oil change. I wouldn't bury 'em, but the deep water idea rcmodel suggested might be an option.

Thanks for being responsible and asking though. :)
