You mean the distance at which your pistol is currently sighted-in? For your purposes, it doesn't matter yet - to clarify this, you need to be putting all your shots into a small group anywhere on the paper - but it has to be a small, tight group.
Once you can shoot tight groups, you can then start adjusting your sights to move the grouping itself to the bullseye at whatever your favorite distance happens to be - 5 yards, 15 yards, 25 - whatever you prefer.
What I used to do was stick a whole bunch of those 1" round target-patches (stickers) all over the target - put it out at 10 yards and try to hit the center of of each patch (you're not allowed to hit the outside edge of the sticker). You can start at 5 yards - it's not as easy at it sounds, but it's close enough for you to visibly see how well you're doing
