My uncles trained their dogs to flush out deer in a managemant are they belonged to. They had to have had about 30+ dogs and would run about 6 to 8 dogs at a time. I could only imagine the cost of feeding them all.
I hunt with my two labs, yellows. We quail hunt. They are usually 15 to 20 yards when they flush a bird and are hell-bent-for-leather after them as I shoot. If I don't hit the bird the male will keep running but give me a dirty look over his shoulder.
When I take a pistol out all the dogs head for cover. I shoot on my own place most of the time and our 4 dogs and 4 cats don't want any part of it.
Nothing feels as bad as your dog giving you 'the look' when you miss.
My bird dogs (springer spaniels) didn't care one bit about handguns, but if you handled anything that looked like a shotgun they would absolutely quiver with anticipation.
