Does anyone know of a firearms industry company in need of a strong writer?

Apologies to the mods if this sort of post won't fly here.

Long story short, I spent the last year and a half as a reporter for a weekly newspaper in a small Maine town. In early March, the media company that owned the paper folded putting me out of a job. I'm searching, but there isn't much demand for employees with strong writing skills in my area.

Taking a glass is half full approach, I'm hoping I can use this time to transition to something better. I've done some freelance writing on the topics of firearms, hunting, and fishing, and I've always wanted to combine my abilities as a writer with my interest in guns for something resembling a steady income.

So, if anyone happens to hear of a business in the firearm or sporting industry that has a need for a writer, I would appreciate a PM.

Jason sorry to hear about your situation.....seems a lot of that stuff is going on.

First question to me would be, "Where are writers used the most"?
Defense contractors yes but, all major Corporations have tech writers who either have to write up Technical specs or give a detailed explanation of the latest greatest widget. Airlines have tec writers who are always writing training manuals or the latest Policy and procedures.

Writing for magazines IMO can be fun but not a very good living in most cases. Large corp with benefits is something you might want to consider....Good luck and hope this helps.

Technical writing is a definite interest of mine. I have the bare bones writing skills necessary, but would need training regarding formatting and industry standard software.

I could also see writing ad copy or helping to produce other marketing documents.

Technical writing as a contractor is a good idea. It's not sexy, but it pays the bills and it's way more available than most other writing gigs.

I don't know how prevalent it is in the gun industry, but in tech I see news and blog sites looking for writers on a pretty regular basis. I'm sure most of these are not full-time gigs by themselves, but if there are similar opportunities on comparable firearms related sites it could open some doors.
