If you watch the videos on the Lee website (and maybe in the manual) it says that the 3rd die (bullet seating die) in their set can be used to crimp by bringing it to the height of the case then turning it in a little further (depending on amount of crimp desired).

Is this a good useable crimp? It seems tight and looks good at a glance. I know they also sell a 4 die set with the "Factory Crimp Die". But if I can make it work in 3 dies, why not right?

I've used the 3 die set up with the crimping seating die and once set correctly will work fine in most cases. Now since I've changed from the Lee Pro 1000 and gone to the Lee Classic Turret with 4 dies I've added the factory crimp dies and do the crimping separate. However the 3 die system worked fine for me with 9mm, 45 ACP, and 45 Colt though my 45-70 I've never tried it since I just started reloading those over the last few months.

Set em up just like any other brand pretty much. The 4 die just includes the FCD. There are a ton of threads on the FCD. I have a few of them and they work well. No need for it normally though. They work very well on rifle crimps fwiw.

There isn't enough information in your question. If your still talking about your .223 then you probably have a deluxe set & that die won't crimp. You don't need to crimp tho. You also only use two of the dies at a time. Ether neck size or full length size but not both.

I know the lee 223 seating die in the RGB die set can crimp, but you shouldnt need to crimp, it just causes more headaches. reading the directions for your die set will tell you.

It depends on the die set.

Iirc the collet die sets have a "dead length" dearer die that will not crimp.

Correct. The Dead Length Bullet Seating Die that came with my Deluxe 30-30 set does not crimp. I had to get the FCD since I am loading for a tube mag.

Lee's web-site explains it all. You have 4 differentdie sets (5 if you count the RGB sets)

1. Pistol - 3 die set A) powder through die, B) Decaping/resizing die and C) Seating die.
2. Deluxe Pistol 4 die set A) powder through die, B) Decaping/resizing die C) Seating die and D) Factory crimp die.
3. Rifle Pacesetter die set (3) - A) Decaping/resizing die, B) Seating die and C) Factory Crimp die.
4. Rifle Deluxe die set (3) - A) Decaping/resizing die, B) Seating die and C) Collet die.

The Rifle Universal Powder through die is sold seperate.

The RGB (Reall Good Buy) die sets are 2 dies - Full length resizing/decaping die and the Seating die.

All other dies are sold seperate.

To answer your question, yes you can use the seating die to put a ROLL crimp on the case.
