I've been thinking what the ultimate gun would be. I know what I want, but don't know if it exists. Let's start with caliber. 9mm I think since it is so cheap. Now I want to build the gun around the cartridge. With the AWBan still pending, I'll have the magazine designed to hold 10 rounds. Good for production class and IDPA too.
To accomplish this I do NOT want a standard double stack cut down the Glock 26 length. No I want a pseudo double stack. I want the magazine, and grip, the length of a Beretta 92 or XD-9, but I want it to be only as wide as is absolutely necessary to accomidate 10 rounds comfortably. And I want the grip to be only as big as absolutely necessary to accomidate the magazine.
Next I want a barrel of between 4.5 and 5 inches. I want it made of stainless on top and either polymer or stainless lower.
If the 1911 weren't so bloody heavy it would be a good candidate. It only comes up 1 short in capacity. If I could marry a Glock 17 top end to a 19 lower and slim the grip down it would come close.
Oh and the price has to be on the low side of $500.

Suggestions.

And I thought I was picky? Would a used H&K USP-C in 9mm serve your purposes?

10 rounds
stainless top
polymer frame
reliable
Used 500.00 maybe

The gun that has the smallest grip for a double stack 9mm seems to me to be the Browning Hi Power. It doesn't meet you other requirements but maybe you can go from there.

A 9mm 1911 variant is the only one that fits your requirements, except for price (to get a stainless one, you'll have to go to STI). Given that you will accept a stainless lower, it is also within your weight limits.

The gun that meets your grip requirement is the BHP...then the CZ lineup. The Compact series of CZ's is a 13 rnd dual stack grip length and is perfect IMO....just me. The stainless upper is the problem..S&W or Taurus make SS upper & SS/Alloy lower guns like your want....the barrel length is there also....thats about all I can tell you.
I sounds like a gun Id like.....
Shoot well

The only problem with the BHP is that the mag is designed to be a 13 rounder, not a 10 rounder as specified.

The new full size Kahr might fit the bill, also Beretta makes a single stack version of its mdl 92.

Also the Sig 225 is single stack, although I think it holds 9 rds.

Few 9mm mags are designed to hold 10 rds, most are blocked full 15rd mags.

You can also get a 1911 version with aluminum frame in 9mm, I think it holds 9 rds.

CZ 75B in Satin Nickel (instead of stainless) is the closest that I can think of to meet your criteria. I looked at one that was NIB for $429.00 last weekend

More thoughts and an explination.

Interesting ideas. I guess what I'm driving at is that when the 10round magazine thing happened, there were two schools of thought. One was to shorten the existing double stack magazines or block the follower so that they couldn't go down too far.
The other was what Beretta, SA (XD-9), and Glock did which was to narrow the magazine so that it was a semi-double stack. Not quite single stack, but only slightly staggered while keeping the grip width unchanged.
What I would like is for Glock or Sig or Beretta, to take that second idea and finish the job. Meaning make a magazine only wide enough to hold 10 rounds in a slightly staggered design and shrink the width of the grip to the minimum required to hold the mag. This could lead to a real narrow grip gun that still holds 10 rounds and still be long enough to get a good hold on.
Beretta started in the right direction with the Type-M, but they never shrank the grip width. Bozos! Think how much narrower the grip of a Glock 17 would be if they designed it around 10 rounds of 9mm keeping the length the same. It could get down to .75 - .80 inches or so.

So am I the only one around who would rather see grips get narrower instead of shorter to accomodate the capacity law?

Too fat grips stink, but too narrow grips stink too, just for different ergonomic reasons. Yeah they would be thin, but who cares if you can't shoot it well? I think some kahrs are close to what you're looking for though.

STI 9mm is the closest. I have shot one and it is absolutely got to be the most gaming gun ever built for IDPA. Only loss is the price you specified, save your pennies.

Perhaps the Walther P99 might fit the bill but I doubt the barrel is much over four inch..
