Last Saturday I got a little 5x5 elk. Shot him about 8am and started packing. Didn't have any help and managed to have him boned out and back at my jeep at 4:40 that afternoon, he was only 1.5 miles in. Hung the meat in my parents garage because I don't have any place to hang that much meat.
I drove to my parents house thanksgiving morning and with the help of my sister and brother in law we were able to get him all processed and in the freezer before dinner. We got 227 pounds of meat off him. It felt really good to put that much meat in the freezer, and be set for the winter.
My original plan was to head out this weekend and shoot the first legal buck I saw, but after all that work I am done. It would be great to put another 80 pounds in the freezer but I am just going to call it a season and be thankful for being alive and having a bunch of meat in the freezer.
